College & Research Libraries News | Relational communications: Developing key connections - 0 views

  •
Florida State University librarians describe a program devised by FSU to encourage faculty to use open access publishing. I like how they focused just as much on educating their library staff and giving them the time and space needed to then go and open recruit faculty, and the resources to keep up the interest.

Yahoo's password leak: What you need to know (FAQ) | Security & Privacy - CNET News - 1 views

  • All of which suggests that close to 300,000 people could have just seen their personal, non-Yahoo e-mail accounts compromised as well as their Yahoo accounts.
  • To be on the safe side, if you have a Yahoo ID, you should assume it's no longer secure and change its password. (I just did, and I've never visited Yahoo's contributor-network site until today.) Yahoo is also changing the passwords of affected users. You should, however, also change other passwords if: You've used the same password for any other major service -- particularly for sensitive accounts such as banking, investing, or e-mail. You've ever signed into Yahoo or Associated Content with a non-Yahoo e-mail address.

Also mentioned in this article is the leak from a few months back of LinkedIn. If you have a LinkedIn account the same advice applies. Hopefully you were using a unique password for all of these services and have nothing to fear ;)

Is the Internet Making Us Crazy? What the New Research Says - Newsweek and The Daily Beast - 1 views

  •
Interesting (but pretty depressing) article: "But the research is now making it clear that the Internet is not "just" another delivery system. It is creating a whole new mental environment, a digital state of nature where the human mind becomes a spinning instrument panel, and few people will survive unscathed."

Seven Top Trailers to Hook Kids on Books - The Digital Shift - 0 views

  •
"Today publishers are spending as much as $20,000 a pop to create book trailers-30- to 90-second teasers, à la movie trailers, designed to generate virtual and word-of-mouth buzz and, of course, to sell titles."

  •
"A new report from the Pew Research Center's Internet and American Life Project finds that 12% of readers of ebooks borrowed an ebook from their libraries in the past year, and a majority of respondents (62%) don't know if their local library provides ebooks. "

Abandoned Walmart Transformed Into A Functioning Library - 0 views

  •
An abandoned Wal-Mart store in McAllen, Texas, has been transformed into a functioning library. The interior space is the size of 2 1/2 football fields making the library the largest single story library in the U.S. Since the building opened user registration has increased by 23% While a great idea for reusing a building--incorporating everything a library needs except aesthetic appeal, I wonder about the heating and cooling costs of the building, which can be monumental.

Louisana eliminates state funding for libraries - 0 views

  •
The state budget for the upcoming year eliminates all funding for public libraries. Commissioner of administration Paul Rainwater stated the libraries could be supported by local, not state dollars. There are two Federal grants within the budget, but they do not cover things such as desktop computer support. Rural libraries with the least amount of property tax are going to be among those most hard hit.

Pretty amazing and scary how effective it was. It could have so easily offended instead. It does once again show the power of social media.

How to Turn a City into a Library - The Digital Reader - 0 views

  •
Interesting project in Austria. They placed 70 QR codes around the city each leading to a particular ebook or mp3 that can be downloaded for free.  The blog states, "This project is in effect giving digital content a finite location, thus removing one of the key aspects that separates paper books from ebooks".
  •
I wonder if the posts are in places with literary or historical significance-- e.g., a QR code near the former home of a famous author, leading to excerpts or readings from his or her books. I can see a huge potential for museums here, actually. For example, at the Old Courthouse in St. Louis, a QR code can be posted to information or collections on the Dred Scott Decision. Or here in Columbia, QR codes posted in the Red Campus can pull up copies of historical documents on the 1892 fire.

So awesome. I'm not sure I'll pay $3 for many of these, but it's cool just the same. I'm actually kinda surprised they are directly monetizing their old content.

Where does the internet live? Interactive | Technology | The Guardian - 0 views

Not necessarily related to anything library-ish, but still pretty cool.  It's easy to forget that the amazing, "invisible" things we can do with technology actually do take up physical space.

Top EU court upholds right to resell downloaded software | Ars Technica - 2 views

  • The European Court of Justice has ruled that customers have a right to resell software they purchase regardless of whether the software was originally distributed on a physical medium or downloaded over the Internet.
  • But the court did place some important limits on customers' rights to resell used software licenses. First, if a customer purchases a multiseat license, it is not allowed to split the license up into parts and sell them separately.
  • The court also held that after reselling the software, the previous owner must render his own copy of the software inoperable.
  •
Now, this took place in the European Union, not the United States (where software is still "licensed" instead of actually sold), but what it means is that people who pay a fee to have software distributed to them now have right of first sale to that license-- that is, they can redistribute it to another person, just as I can give a book I purchased to someone else.

Technology - Suzanne Fischer - Nota Bene: If You 'Discover' Something in an Archive, It... - 1 views

  • Says one curator, "I wish there were more articles headlined 'Thorough, Accurate Cataloging Pays Off!' "
  • So where was this document found? Was it in a suitcase in the attic of Dr. Leale's great-great-great-great granddaughter? Well, no, it was at the National Archives. Was it in a warped metal filing cabinet down a neglected set of stairs labeled "Beware of the Leopard"? No, it was in a box of other incoming correspondence to the Surgeon General, filed alphabetically under "L" for Leale. In short, this document that had been excavated from the depths of the earth with great physical effort was right where it was supposed to be.
  • In the case of the recent press on the Leale report, the report had not yet been catalogued, cutting off discovery for ordinary researchers searching with finding aids and online catalogues.
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • This is because archivists catalogue not at "item level," a description of every piece of paper, which would take millennia, but at "collection level," a description of the shape of the collection, who owned it,

A somewhat lighthearted response to all the excitement about the "discovery" of the Leale report, a report made to the Surgeon General by the first doctor to treat Abraham Lincoln after he was shot at Ford's Theater.   It's very interesting that, even though it was in the collection, where it should be, no one thought to use it in research until now.

Cataloging in the cloud « all things cataloged - 0 views

  • The cloud computing models [1] of leading library systems vendors will not only change the way data is stored, but will also affect the way we catalog.
  • global and local
  • more content, less standard
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • governance
  • we’re headed in the direction of a “global consortium”, in which system vendors become data providers
  •
An interesting observation by a British librarian that the new, incoming model of cataloging done and stored in the cloud by vendors will cause some shifting in practices.   Namely, vendors' records will be seen as "master records."  Also, the sheer number of different people using the same "master record" will result on an easing of standards, while at the same time a governing structure will have to be set up in order for libraries to determine which standards to loosen and which to adhere to.
