Mobile Web Best Practices 1.0 - 0 views

  •
This document specifies Best Practices for delivering Web content to mobile devices. The principal objective is to improve the user experience of the Web when accessed from such devices. The recommendations refer to delivered content and not to the processes by which it is created, nor to the devices or user agents to which it is delivered. It is primarily directed at creators, maintainers and operators of Web sites. Readers of this document are expected to be familiar with the creation of Web sites, and to have a general familiarity with the technologies involved, such as Web servers and HTTP. Readers are not expected to have a background in mobile-specific technologies.

Around the globe, various initiatives use the mobile phone to provide financial services to those without access to traditional banks. Yet relatively little scholarly research explores the use of these m-banking/m-payments systems. This paper calls attention to this gap in the research literature, emphasizing the need for research focusing on the context(s) of m-banking/mpayments use. Presenting illustrative data from exploratory work with small enterprises in urban India, it argues that contextual research is a critical input to effective "adoption" or "impact" research. Further, it suggests that the challenges of linking studies of use to those of adoption and impact reflect established dynamics within the Information and Communication Technologies and Development (ICTD) research community. The paper identifies three crosscutting themes from the broader literature-amplification vs. change, simultaneous causality, and a multidimensional definition of trust-each of which can offer increased theoretical clarity to future research on m-banking/m-payments systems.

Now You Can Take Videos From Vimeo Anywhere You Go! - 0 views

If you are a frequent visitor of Vimeo, you will be sure to notice that there are many interesting ones to see. But what happens when you want to download some of these videos? Sure, you could always bookmark it to have it nearby, but if you happened to see several of these videos and have multiple bookmarks already, finding your way to the video when you want to see it might become messy.

The modern web is viewed on many different devices, so it is getting increasingly important for us to think about how to create our web sites so that they will serve the right content to users, no matter what device they are using. We have many technologies at our disposal, including media types, media queries, and browser sniffing, but what's the best way to handle this?

Getting Started with Firefox extension - Diigo help - 0 views

  •  Feature Highlight: Highlights Diigo saves the day with "highlights". Highlights let you select the important snippets on a page and store them in your library with the page's bookmark. Let's try it. Just open a page, maybe one of your old-school bookmarks or one of your new cat bookmarks, and find the information on that page you actually care about. Select that important text. Got it? Okay, now put your hemet on, 'cause this might blow your mind! Click the highlight icon on the Diigo toolbar. It's the one with the "T" on a page with a yellow highlighter. You will notice that the selected text gets a yellow background. This means that the text has been saved in your library, and as long as you have the Diigo add-on the text will be highlighted on the page! How's that for easy?   Now you've highlighted the text. It will appear in your library within the bookmark for the page it is on. Go to your library and you can see how it works. If you're not sure how to get to your library, just click the second icon on the toolbar (Diigo icon to the left of the search bar) and then select "My Library »".
  • Sticky Notes on the Web What? I can put a sticky note on a web page? How? Oh, that's right! Diigo. Just right-click anywhere on the page and choose to "add a floating sticky note". Type up your note and choose "Post", then move the note anywhere on the page. You have to type a note first, before you move it where you want, otherwise there's nothing to move!

Why Your Business Needs a Mobile Commerce Strategy Now - 0 views

Mobile apps are like your neighborhood produce store. You walk inside the doors looking for specific items. They also typically let users tap into their phone's full potential. For example, a native app might integrate with a phone's camera, voice recorder, contacts or other features. And for shoppers looking for a richer, more advanced interface, applications typically win out over the mobile web because they are designed specifically for that handset's hardware and operating system. Overall, native apps offer a tailored shopping experience that's well delivered but limited. The mobile web on the other hand is a like a huge shopping mall with seemingly limitless stores and tons of options all under one giant roof. It's not as constricted or fragmented as shopping on disparate mobile apps but the experience isn't as tailored as the specialty store. Unlike device-specific native apps though, the mobile web has enormous flexibility and, usually, much larger reach. Customers don't need to download robust programs from app stores to their handset in order to begin shopping. Instead, all they have to do is type in a web address in their mobile browser to start spending their digital dollars. Much of the time mobile sites serve as stripped-down versions of regular websites and serve a utilitarian purpose: selling goods and services.

Cupcake update may be coming to the G1 Android device in April | Mobile Phone News Update - 1 views

  •
I wrote a couple of times about the upcoming cupcake update for the T-Mobile G1 Google Android device and it now looks like this updated may be coming to us in April. According to Pocket-lint T-Mobile confirmed to them that the update is coming to G1 owners soon. There was no confirmation on the rumored G2 that may also be coming in April, but I will be at CTIA later this month and we may see more news about this non-keyboard device then.

Web designers know that the industry involves plenty of change, and continuous adaption and development of skills is required in order to stay up to date. » Mobilize, Don't Miniaturize :::Little Springs Design::: - 0 views

Too often, when companies decide to make a mobile version of their application, they take their desktop application or site, decide which features work for mobile, and then convert those features to a mobile language or two. Through this method we get flight times, stock prices, checking email, checking calendars, local weather, and several other useful but limited applications. These applications do not fully meet user needs. To do anything in particular, the user has to visit several applications, one after the other, remembering data from application to application.

Gesturecons - Multi-Touch Icons - 0 views

  •
"Vector based icons created to aid in the design, development, implementation and promotion of multi-touch interfaces. These icons will aid in the creation of wire-frame documents, digital help files and printed documentation. You can also use Gesturecons inside of your applications in order to demonstrate to users how to complete actions or prompt them to interact with an application when they approach it. "

A Dispassionate Review of Reviews - The Conversation - Harvard Business Review - 0 views

If you're a manager, you should set goals according to how simple, important (to the company and the employee), and measurable they are. Fifty years of behavioral research suggests that's all that's needed. Since feedback can be challenging both to give and to receive, "feed forward" instead. This approach (popularized by author and HBR blogger Marshall Goldsmith) suggests that instead of telling someone what they've done wrong, you should tell them what they should do differently. Consider the difference between these two pieces of feedback: "You talk too much in our team meetings," versus "In our next team meeting, try to be the last one who offers their opinions." Which would you rather hear?
