Android phones running stock or manufacturer-installed KitKat 4.4+ get a big photo-shooting upgrade today. Google Camera is now available from the Play store. The app replaces the standard shooter on Nexus devices and places a separate camera app on others. The headline feature: Lens Blur, which does exactly what the name indicates. You shoot the image, and then use the app to either blur the foreground or background. Photographers call the capability "bokeh", and it usually requires a specialized lens on dedicated hardware to produce well. The blurred effect is highly desirable for portraits. Can you say selfie?

iOS 9 was announced at WWDC 2015 and comes equipped with some impressive new features, including better battery life, multi tasking capabilities and a smarter Siri.App Developers can access the operating system now, whilst consumers in Australia will have to wait until August - September tao download it.

The past couple of years have seen numerous new web-capable mobile devices arise, including Apple's iPhone and its Safari browser, the creation of Google's Android platform and Webkit-based browser, the rise of so called "full web" browsers (Nokia's S60, Opera Mobile and Opera Mini, among others), the early development of Firefox's mobile version, and more. These mobile browsers improve users' experiences, giving them access to websites formerly off-limits to most mobile devices. Indeed, as a 2008 Nielsen Media Research report highlighted, mobile devices have increased traffic by an average of 13% across several popular websites.

RPI's Tetherless World Constellation will address this emerging area of "Web Science," focusing on the World Wide Web and it's future use. Faculty in the constellation will explore the research and engineering principles that underlie the Web, will enhance the Web's reach beyond the desktop and laptop computer, and will develop new technologies and languages that expand the capabilities of the Web.

I wrote a couple of times about the upcoming cupcake update for the T-Mobile G1 Google Android device and it now looks like this updated may be coming to us in April. According to Pocket-lint T-Mobile confirmed to them that the update is coming to G1 owners soon. There was no confirmation on the rumored G2 that may also be coming in April, but I will be at CTIA later this month and we may see more news about this non-keyboard device then.
