Här har författarna kritiskt granskat ett tiotal artiklar och anser att dessa projekt varit kontrollerade av forskarna. De har valt vilken typ av enhet som ska användas av en utvald liten grupp av elever, för att undersöka det formella lärandet som uppstår. Resultaten har enhälligt varit mycket framgångsrika och eleverna har förbättrat sitt lärande långt över deras förväntningar. Författarna anser att det finns alltför lite litteratur om det informella lärandet som sker, utifrån elevernas egna val av enheter och hur de valt att använda den teknologin i sin vardag.
