Taking on the Millennium Development Goals is a major world wide task that will have to involve nations across the globe. We, though as individuals can take small steps every day to make the world a better place.

The dollar-a-day perspective is an important one is all aspects of life but especially in regards to health care. Healthcare providers trying to achieve the Millennium Development goals not only have to overcome the poverty of the individual but the poverty of national infrastructure.

First, the UK needs to meet our moral commitment to increase spending on aid to 0.7 per cent gross national income. But this investment has to go hand-in-hand with greater transparency, ensuring the money reaches the people who need it most. A Conservative government will create an independent aid watchdog and publish every item of aid spending online, so that the performance and impact of development policies are transparent to taxpayers in Britain and to people in the developing world.

This is an official Online Event in support of the 3 day global Stand Up Take Action End Poverty Now event. For the past four years millions of people around the world have made the decision to be counted and "Stand Up and Take Action" www.standagainstpoverty.org demanding that world leaders end poverty and achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). 189 world leaders made a promise at the United Nations Millennium Summit through he Millennium Declaration in 2000 adopting the MDGs as a roadmap to end poverty and its root causes. That promise is still unfulfilled by all but a few countries, including the United States.

The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), a specialized agency of the United Nations, was established as an international financial institution in 1977 as one of the major outcomes of the 1974 World Food Conference. The Conference was organized in response to the food crises of the early 1970s that primarily affected the Sahelian countries of Africa. The conference resolved that "an International Fund for Agricultural Development should be established immediately to finance agricultural development projects primarily for food production in the developing countries". One of the most important insights emerging from the conference was that the causes of food insecurity and famine were not so much failures in food production, but structural problems relating to poverty and to the fact that the majority of the developing world's poor populations were concentrated in rural areas.

This year World Population Day highlights the importance of data for development. The focus is on the 2010 round of the population and housing census, data analysis for development and UNFPA's lead role in population and development.

WHAT IS THE MDG MONITOR? The MDG Monitor shows how countries are progressing in their efforts to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). With the 2015 target date fast approaching, it is more important than ever to understand where the goals are on track, and where additional efforts and support are needed, both globally and at the country level.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) is devoted to advancing opportunities for women and men to obtain decent and productive work in conditions of freedom, equity, security and human dignity. Its main aims are to promote rights at work, encourage decent employment opportunities, enhance social protection and strengthen dialogue in handling work-related issues. In promoting social justice and internationally recognized human and labour rights, the organization continues to pursue its founding mission that labour peace is essential to prosperity. Today, the ILO helps advance the creation of decent jobs and the kinds of economic and working conditions that give working people and business people a stake in lasting peace, prosperity and progress.

All are essential in meeting the challenge of the Millennium Development Goals.

Healthcare, even in our own backyard, is often a matter of a new way of thinking and not necessarily a funding problem.

Our potential motivation to get behind global child healthcare seems dubious if we are 29th in the world. The problem does is not a matter of not enough money but how we live our lives.

The Millennium Campaign emerged as a response to the failing efforts of governments in keeping their promises and commitments to achieve the MDGs by the target year 2015. As an initiative of the UN, the Campaign aims to inspire a global movement to achieve the Goals and eradicate extreme poverty by 2015.
