This is a first announcement and invitation to participate in the International Conference on Language Policy, Planning and Support in Higher Education - Challenges of Multilingualism. As the title suggests, three main themes will be dealt with: * The development, implementation and management of language policies for a multicultural, multilingual higher education setting * Language planning (management, structures, services, etc.) needed to support language policies in a multicultural, multilingual higher education setting * The diversity of language support initiatives needed to guarantee successful language policy implementation in a multicultural, multilingual higher education setting The conference will be held at the Spier Estate outside Stellenbosch, South Africa, a magnificent rural setting that should stimulate fascinating discussion on a set of complex topics. Lesson study is a simple idea. If you want to improve instruction, what could be more obvious than collaborating with fellow teachers to plan, observe, and reflect on lessons? While it may be a simple idea, lesson study is a complex process, supported by collaborative goal setting, careful data collection on student learning, and protocols that enable productive discussion of difficult issues.

What Is Faculty Inquiry? Faculty inquiry is a form of professional development by which teachers identify and investigate questions about their students' learning. The inquiry process is ongoing, informed by evidence of student learning, and undertaken in a collaborative setting. Findings from the process come back in the form of new curricula, new assessments, and new pedagogies, which in turn become subjects for further inquiry. When faculty pursue such inquiry in the company of colleagues and students, they create a "teaching commons" on their campus-a set of interconnected forums where conversations about learning take place, where innovations in curriculum and pedagogy get tried out, and where questions and answers about education are exchanged, critiqued and built upon.

Thinking more about the idea of creating a high quality curriculum resource that is open, I have focused in on writing as a subject matter. Why? First and foremost, I love writing and think it has the ability to transform lives. Beyond that, it transfers to all other subject areas and grade levels, and success in writing is correlated to success in many other endeavors. Writing is fun and rewarding. Technology can greatly enhance writing skills for many.

Media Cloud is a system that lets you see the flow of the media. The Internet is fundamentally altering the way that news is produced and distributed, but there are few comprehensive approaches to understanding the nature of these changes. Media Cloud automatically builds an archive of news stories and blog posts from the web, applies language processing, and gives you ways to analyze and visualize the data. The system is still in early development, but we invite you to explore our current data and suggest research ideas. This is an open-source project, and we will be releasing all of the code soon.
