Digital media conversion is becoming an increasingly frequent task at the CLS, and the computational power it usually requires leaves many staff workstations running below acceptable levels for the duration of the job. To help offload these tasks, we've devised a script to be run on a dedicated media conversion server that offers true "drag 'n' drop" functionality for media encoding.

Use gClassFolders Template to create a paperless classroom by automatically create shared folders for students. This script was created to accompany the Google Class Model that I recommend for teachers to help organize the classroom: Google Classroom Model Each Classroom set up a Class Edit, Class View, and Dropbox folder.  Make sure to include both the name of the student and the class so that multiple classrooms are not using the same naming convention.

DVDSubber use the time code of the DVD to synchronize the subtitle with the movie. You can pause, fast forward, go to your favorite scene, the subtitle will always stay synchronized with the video. You can either us an already existing subtitles scripts or create one from scratch using the embeded editor. And of course DVDSubber is 100% freeware and contains absolutly no spyware or addware.

Learn the Arabic characters from Hindi and English characters

VOICE comprises naturally occurring, non-scripted face-to-face interactions in English as a lingua franca (ELF). The recordings made for VOICE are keyboarded by trained transcribers and stored as a computerized corpus. Currently VOICE comprises 1 million words of spoken ELF interactions, equalling approximately 120 hours of transcribed speech. The speakers recorded in VOICE are experienced ELF speakers from a wide range of first language backgrounds. So far, VOICE includes approximately 1250 ELF speakers with approximately 50 different first languages (disregarding varieties of the respective languages). In the initial phase, VOICE focuses mainly, though not exclusively, on European ELF speakers. The ELF interactions recorded cover a range of different speech events in terms of domain (professional, educational, leisure), function (exchanging information, enacting social relationships), and participant roles and relationships (acquainted vs. unacquainted, symmetrical vs. asymmetrical).

Ukelele aims to simplify keyboard layout editing by providing a graphical interface to .keylayout files, where the desired characters can simply be dragged onto keys as needed. (The Character Palette or Character Viewer, available in the Input menu if it has been enabled in System Preferences, is a great place to find the characters.) In addition to simple assignment of single character codes to keys, Ukelele can assign multiple-character strings and can create "dead keys", where a keystroke sets a new state that modifies the output of the following keystroke. For some types of layout, particularly with large numbers of dead-key sequences, creating a layout with the text-based tool KeyLayoutMaker may be a useful alternative.

This podcast is technically for Japanese speakers learning English, but advanced speakers of Japanese could gleam some information from this podcast. This podcast has been around since mid-September 2006. PDF scripts are supplied, which make a huge difference in understanding what is going on in the podcasts.
