9 to 5 was established in 1973 by a group of working women out of Boston, Massachusetts. They are working to bring working women's issues to the surface so that the public can be aware of them and can help to make more acceptable policies that benefit the working women. Today's women want to be self sufficient and want to be able to support their family or contribute to supporting their family and 9 to 5 wants to help bring those policies into effect. They also want to eliminate workplace discrimination and along with educating people about their legal rights and monitoring enforcement agencies, they also have a job hotline available for people to call to offer information legal rights, strategies, and ways to get involved. The website is geared toward the public to help people become more informed of the problems that our working women face today. This website is also geared toward our public officials so that they have access to the problems that working women face in America so that they can see the high priority it is for the working woman to have equal pay and family friendly policies available for them and all employees. They provide information on current Acts going before our state and federal governments so that people can contact their representatives in support of the Act in hopes that they will support it as well. I found this website easy to maneuver and acquire important information on issues that are going on in the United States today. This semester we have been reading about issues that the working families in the United States are dealing with and discussing options of policies to make a better work/family balance in our lives. Looking at this website I learned that the Healthy Families Act is introduced to Congress this month and members of the National Association of Working Women are in Washington D.C. to speak to senators and representatives. This bill would allow employees of a workplace with 15 or more employees to earn up to 7 paid sick days per year to use to take time off if the employee is sick, to care for a sick family member, or to go to a doctor's visit. It's nice to see that this bill is coming up in Congress after we have been talking about the need for a change in policy this semester. This is just one example of some of the issues and possible solutions that are included in the website.
