Provides breakdown of publishing costs for hardcover books vs. e-versions. Authors get screwed, while publishers struggle to cover their overhead costs and maintain profitability.
A group of experts examine theenvironmental impact of print media versus electronic media. Counter-intuitive findings. It may be (not for sure though) that newspapers are actually a greener option. They use recycled paper, whereas using the computer uses energy and contributes to e-waste. This just doesn't seem right...
With the impending arrival of digital books on the Apple iPad and feverish negotiations with Amazon.com over e-book prices, publishers have managed to take some control - at least temporarily - of how much consumers pay for their content.
When Barnes & Noble (NYSe: BKS) announced its Nook e-reader in October, the ability to pursue a dual in-store and online sales strategy appeared to be one of the clear advantages it might have over Amazon (NSDQ: AMZN). But, as we first reported then, the chain didn't plan to sell Nooks to go in all its stores for the 2009 holidays-and, as it turned out, the combination of demand and distribution issues kept the device from store shelves. Instead, most people who bought Nooks at B&N stores were placing online orders for delivery weeks or months into the future-not buying them for same-day use.
Study shows that electronic versions of news magazines do not conform to the same news reporting standards as print versions. e-versions areeither not fact checked (11%) or less rigorously edited (48%).
"Microsoft (NSDQ:MSFT)'s release Wednesday of its Outlook Social Connector beta is another indication of how social networking has infiltrated not only the online world, but also enterprise software. The Outlook Social Connector, a new feature in Office 2010, blends social networking updates into the business functionality of the software. With Outlook Social Connector, a user can view an e-mail message and social networking activities from the same sender in the same window pane. For now, though, it doesn't allow posting updates back onto LinkedIn or other social-networking sites directly from the inbox."

The Associated Press is creating a strategic business unit to come up with fresh experiences for news on the web, mobile phones, tablets, and e-readers.
"A patent application by Google (GOOG), filed in August 2008 and only made public last week, shows that the company is working on an automated way to split printed magazines and newspapers into individual articles that it could then deliver separately. Although this could allow Google to convert stacks of periodicals into electronic archives, it potentially sends the company headlong into conflict with a famous Supreme Court ruling on media law."
Amazon is playing hardball with book publishers. The Seattle online bookseller says it will give authors a 70%
cut of the sale of e-books sold for its Kindle readers, essentially offering writers a way to bypass traditional book
publishers.
America's advanced cellphone network is already beginning to be bogged down by smartphones that double as computers, navigation devices and e-book readers. Cellphones are increasingly being used as TVs, which hog even more bandwidth. They can also transmit video, allowing for videoconferencing on cellphones.
Apple Inc. is expected to hold an event on Jan. 27 to introduce its eagerly anticipated tablet computer. Apple sent invitations by e-mail message to reporters on Monday that said, "Come see our latest creation" at a theater in San Francisco.

"A ChangeWave survey of 3,171 consumers -- conducted in the aftermath of that Apple announcement (Feb 1-10) -- shows a huge wave of pre-launch demand for the iPad and offers key evidence that the Apple tablet will have a major impact on thee-Reader, laptop and homeentertainment markets."
