The Secret Life of Pronouns - 0 views

  •
"The Secret Life of Pronouns examines how and why pronouns and other forgettable words reveal so much about us. Partly a research journey, the book traces the discovery of the links between function words and social and psychological states." Relevant due to its use of social media as a means to uncover how the use of language both affects and shapes our lives or reveals something about our personality traits or states of mind.

Media Boundaries/parenting post - 2 views

  • We've known for quite a while how the different forms of media (radio, TV, magazines, etc) can influence our lives.
    • John Fenn

have we? what does this somewhat ungrounded truism tell us about "boundaries" when it comes to media and the social world?
  • In TV shows the theme seems to be that most parents are stupid, naive or inept at raising their children.
    • John Fenn

is this "theme" unique to TV shows (or other screen-media)? plenty of "children's books" deal with such content....as do 'fairy tales' and other oral lit....
  • adults before they are truly ready

Joel Hodgson on 'Mystery Science Theater' and Riffs - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  •
If you've not enjoyed an episode or several of Mystery Science Theatre 3000 (or MST3K), this article provides and excellent overview. Hodgson teaches a master class on riffing, focusing on the art of storytelling and relating it both to the story being told (film) and the audience experience. Interesting points are also lightly touched on regarding the implications of something like movie riffing in the age of social media.  Also, if you've not done so previously, I recommend RiffTrax, the downloadable mp3 tracks meant to be played along with popular, contemporary movies, as opposed to the B-list flicks riffed on in MST3K. (These tracks are not paired with the movies themselves due to, of course, copyright issues.)

The Flight From Conversation - NYTimes.com - 3 views

  •
Sunday Review opinion piece from the NY Times that questions how much our use of media may or may not lead to "connecting" with others. Is technology keeping us from learning how to carry on a conversation? How to interact with human beings in-person? How much is one's self-curated (and self-edited) identity representative of the total package that is the self?

Pedagogical Ethics in a Digital Age | HASTAC - 0 views

  •
Interesting forum. Obviously the focus is on pedagogy; however, the discussion is highly situational and lacks the necessary theoretical underpinnings of ethical principles. There seems to be a strong focus on issues of privacy and surveillance but not as much on the actual ethical implications of what it means to use digital tools in the classroom.
  •
Yes...a morphing of "ethics" and "privacy" appears to be the dominant discourse at the moment (here and elsewhere). While they are not the same things, there does appear to be an anxiety about the "boundaries" around privacy in pedagogical situations that manifest in the unfurling of ethical flags...but what are the other ethical implications of using digital tools in the classroom (or pedagogically, more broadly)? conversely, what are ethical implications for NOT doing so?

what's NOT on this list (or the emergent "limits") of what MEDIA end up on LibraryMixer? What does this tell us about the "boundaries" concept when it comes to understanding AND/OR sharing (i.e. social exchange) media?

Police exploring new media boundaries | Metro - 0 views

  • Calgary police could soon go behind the lens for a change to shoot their own news videos addressing community concerns. Other frontline officers may be given the opportunity to inform the public through frequently updated blogs. These two initiatives and many others are on the table as the Calgary Police Service maps out a new strategy to interact with the public like never before.

The Couch » Media Boundaries and Kids » The Couch - 0 views

  • Electronics were created to make life easier. Instead, they’ve become time-consuming beasts gobbling up any extra moment in our day. Since unplugging, the kids are doing even better in school. Books are seen in the hands of my kids now, and their test scores are soaring. Have I mentioned the greatest advantage? Our home is a sanctuary from the storms of the world. Peace reigns once again.

As the matriarch of our home it wasn't long before I realized I was plugged in a lot, and when I looked around, it was clear I had little constraint with plugged in things. We were battling a fire-spitting media-dragon-our television. When I stopped to think about it, there were days I gave more of my undivided attention to it than any of my four children combined. It was my daily drug of choice, taking me to far-away places, allowing me to peek inside homes I prayed were more dysfunctional than ours, and taught me more about great white sharks than I cared to admit. Yes, I loved my TV. I couldn't imagine living without it.

Hecklevision | Hollywood Theatre - 0 views

The Portland Mercury and historic Hollywood Theatre have come together to bring you HECKLEVISION, an all-new series that will permanently change how you think about movie-going. Here's how it works, in three easy steps: 1) We (Merc & HWT) pick a hilariously horrible movie (but one we secretly love). 2) Through the magic of MuVChat technology, you text your heckles, jokes, and commentary from your seat and they appear onscreen below the film 3) We all drink beer and laugh a lot.Sound awesome?  Then charge up those cellphones, limber up your thumbs, and get ready to launch your best text lobs at our screen!
