This short article discusses strategies for helping adolescents who are reading at low levels.

This article provides information on helping older students who struggle with reading and Word study for adolescents who read at a very low level. It also provides next steps for these students. Even though it is geared toward older students, the strategies can be applied to younger ones as well. My Smart goal, 80% of students will reach level K in reading (lowest grade-appropriate reading level for second grade) by the beginning of the December, can be aided by this strategy. Word Study support can aid in decoding skills, which in turn helps students to become better readers. And once students can decode successfully, they can really focus in on the comprehension skills.

This article provides detailed background information regarding explicit writing instruction, especially regarding students with special needs such as ADHD, but the strategies discussed can be adapted and used with all learners regardless of ability or grade level. The article begins with a focus on strategies for providing students with motivational contexts for their writing as well as making writing a routine that they enjoy. The rest of the article is divided into sections based on students' ability/age level (basic skills, revising and editing, and motivation). This article discusses strategies that can help address teachers address students' learning gaps in elaboration and explaining their ideas fully in expository writing tasks. This article shows that through reflective teaching and coaching, diverse struggling readers can beneficiate from different strategies and will help to close instructional gaps.

I like the ideas presented here, they elaborate on the need for ELL students to have word association and phonetic instruction to further their understanding of content. This is particularly stressed in the elementary grades, however having a teaching coach for ELL learners in the higher grades could assist students that did not have phonetic instruction in the lower grades. One particular item of interest was the comment made that data results from assessment is not analyzed until later in the year and as a result does not benefit the students that took the assessment. Due to this the author stresses the need for collaboration of the teaching team to identify skills and strategies needed and subsequently develop ways to address the skill or strategy needed that will enhance learning.

This document provides a detailed overview of the writing process for teachers of and students in secondary schools (grades 7-12). It provides numerous strategies teachers in all content areas can employ to encourage students to write more frequency and with more fluency. The document is organized in chronological order according to the steps of the writing process (Generating Ideas, Developing and Organizing Ideas, and Revising and Editing). Each of these steps in the writing process is described and accompanied by detailed activities. The explicit guidelines (instructions) for each activity could be easily utilized by a novice teacher, but even a seasoned master teacher can benefit from exploring the strategies posed in this document. To address our identified learning gap (that secondary students struggle to elaborate on initial ideas in their writing), the section on "Adding Content" on p. 104 of this document is especially helpful.

This is a research from the 1970s and 1980s on the characteristics of effective elementary school teachers highlighted the importance of a strong academic focus, explicit instruction, and high levels of pupils on task. In 2011, the NEA put out a C.A.R.E guide. This guide focuses on four areas that need to be recognized in order to close the achievement gaps in education. These areas are Culture, Abilities, Resilience, and Effort. This is a very length article; however, it also has some interesting sections. It is focused on younger students learning to read. There are sections about different reading instructional strategies and their implications and effectiveness.

This article suggests that improving upon a LD student's level of reading requires a strong combination of well-developed and strategic instructional strategies. These strategies include direct response and cueing processes, scaffolding, modeling the process, and providing an organizational structure to record, review and reflect upon learning.

Jennifer, I really like this article. It can be frustrating enough for parents and students when reading difficulties occur. Add to this complication learning difficulties, and the problems and insecurities really start to add up. This article, and the years of research that it is based on helped to enumerate the many reading interventions that already exist for students with documented learning disabilities. Week 7: We are always looking for new strategies for teaching fitness to our middle school students (the article focuses on students aged 13-19). Focuses not just on their physical ability but also their cognitive abilities. When we discussed this reading we all agreed when the article said " Be aware that many teenagers have a short attention span. Create variety to keep them excited and engaged. Circuits, boot camps, strength training and partner yoga are great choices for teens." We recently did a circuit workout that included all of those things. (Stevenson, 2013)

This is from Skills You need, Helping You Develop Life Skills. These guidelines and tips are to help students become active readers and improve their learning. Effective note-taking strategies while reading are provided depending on the task involved as well as organization of notes. The strategies can be shared with students of any discipline and any age.

(Week 7: Ruchel and Beth) This journal article is accessible through the link given above by accessing the UMUC library. This journal article discuss practical strategies to help with teaching the alphabet. The importance of the alphabet for early literacy skills is discussed in the article. The article stresses the flaw with the popular "letter of the week" way of teaching the alphabet including the fact that this method takes 26 weeks just to cover the alphabet as well as the fact that if students know a number of letters those weeks are a waste of valuable class time. Teachers can use this article to further their instructional practices in the early childhood classroom by focusing on EAK (Enhanced Alphabet Knowledge Instruction) which "emphasizes identifying the letter name and sound, recognizing the letter in text, and producing the letter form, through flexible, distributed cycles of review based on factors that influence acquisition of alphabet knowledge" (Jones, Clark & Reutzel, 2013). "Rather than the traditional method of one cycle of massed instruction, EAK instruction advocates teaching letters through multiple, distributed instructional cycles which allows for letters to be introduced, practiced, and revisited several times, as needed, during the school year" (Jones et al., 2013). Chapter 6 of this book by Pérsida Himmele and William Himmele focuses on Total Participation Techniques that move. Of particular interest to my data team is the section of this chapter on Bounce Cards. This strategy can help all students feel confident and comfortable participating in a group discussion. I think it can be especially helpful to world language teachers looking to encourage students to discuss academic topics in the target language. (Week 9)

This source is a list of research-based strategies you can use to teach beginning phonics and phonemic awareness skills to struggling readers. It is meant to used as intervention methods.  Some of these suggested activities would be good for use in whole group scenarios but many of the activities would be better for us in working with small groups of students. Most of the suggested activities are multi-sensory and interactive.

Teachers can look through these to see which ones might be useful to address their students' learning gaps. Week 9: This is a journal article that ties in the importance of screencasts and mathematical education. The article delves deeper into e-learning and evaluates the effectiveness of screencasts on both math and science. Screencasts can be used as instructional strategies for increasing learning beyond what an individual educator can do for any one child at a time. The key behind this strategy in its value is if it is reused enough times to impact learning. It is a resource to keep in mind when planning for reteaching or providing more exposure and support for a concept learned.
