Teaching Biology Content is Teaching Reading - 0 views

  •
Week 8 This reading selection is for Honors High school Biology students learning about Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology. It is an article from CSA Discovery Guides by Deborah M. Whitman titled "Genetically Modified Foods: Harmful or Helpful?" released in 2000. The reading discusses what genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are, what the advantages and criticisms are, how prevalent GM crops are, what plants are involved, and how GM food are regulated and labeled. The assignment for this reading is to: 1. Read the article 2. Take notes on the pros and cons for the use of GMOs (Cornell Notes as part of my data action plan) 3. Choose a side (for /against) 4. Make a claim and justify that claim 5. Create a persuasive poster to support that claim. For differentiation, the article can be shortened and simplified for readers of different levels.

For our purposes, the three highlighted resources on this page would be the three presentations I would use to introduce the skill. I would recommend that the first one be assigned for homework in a flipped scenario since they should have encountered main ideas in English class before this lesson. Then the other two can be done in class with the teacher and student interaction on the activities.

Slideshows teaching these skills with built in activities for students. Slideshows are in English, but students will need to understand the skill first before they can transfer it to the target language. Teachers can provide French examples to supplement the slideshows.

Search › simple circuits | Quizlet - 1 views

  •
Week 9 Quizlet is an online study tool that allows users to setup vocabulary list or use existing vocabulary list setup at their site to study in six interactive ways. I highly suggest Scatter and Race. Chris, Alison, and Patricia
  •
This Quizlet activity offers students a way to study for a test, test their knowledge, and improve their competency in the subject. This is a tool which has many different functions and purposes; teacher can use it as a homework assignment, a redo qualifier, or even a warm up activity. This integrates technology in the classroom in a way which is not a burden or done simply because it can be, if integrated it adds to the experience without detracting from the content or user experience.
  •
Quizlet is a useful tool for the classroom. There is a library of "little quizes" already available for use in the class in a range of subjects. These allow students to review vocabulary, definitions and test their knowledge. There are various methods of reviewing the material, one example being flashcards. A teacher can also create their own lesson/quiz using Quizlet. The program could effectively be used to review for a test or as an exit ticket done in the class or at home.

Yummy Math | We provide teachers and students with mathematics relevant to our world to... - 0 views

  •
This is a great site for teachers that has free feature and a cheap pay feature. The free feature will still give educators access to worksheets, but with the paid for version you can edit the worksheets to fit more of your classroom style. This helps tie real world problems into the math classroom, helping with the age old question "When will I ever use this." Hopefully this connection will help students not only enjoy math but remember it more too.

How to Integrate Technology | Edutopia - 0 views

Week 9: This article deals with integrating technology in the classroom. Although, a lot of what is discussed in the article has been talked about in some of the courses, the on paragraph I like and find helpful is on Using Technology for Feedback and Assessment. It provides a few online tools that could help teachers get quick feedback on a lesson. Teachers could use this to help with using different technology tools to gain feedback from their students.

Thanks for this - my own children have used this and love it. I keep meaning to add it to my list of things to explore. I like how the English section has different areas for grammar, writing etc.
  •
I like the site, I started exploring it and noticed that I can easily spend much time on it without realizing it.
  •
There is also BrainPop Jr. (http://www.brainpopjr.com/) for the younger levels. I love the site as a review or introduction for any concepts that we are teaching.
  •
My kids love BrainPop! I think there may have even been a Wii version of this game. :)
  •
Very cool, I didn't know Social Studies was on Brain Pop. I'm excited to use it in the classroom.

Edmodo is a great tool - I have used it to help to flatten my classroom this year and have two different grade levels work together. I use it to post my lesson agenda with links to the resources as well as homework, assignments etc. It links to Google, you can upload files, you can conduct polls, have a schedule - it is safe, it promotes collaboration and self-support - it is brilliant.
  •
Edmodo is also a great site to use for a class homepage. It's a good resources for students and teachers. We have Edline in our county but I think the personalization of this is better.

Seventh Grade Students' Perceptions of Using Concept Cartoons in Science and Technology... - 2 views

  •
The article shows how you can encourage student dialogue. In this study, the class was given a cartoon showing characters discussing a new or current class topic that has common misconceptions associated with it. After viewing the cartoon, students are asked to take sides and either defend or refute one of the characters' opinions about what they are expressing. This helps students focus on the topic because they are not reading an article or passage that is asking for feedback, but rather they are taking part in a sort of 'debate' amongst these characters. It is a starting point for a student centered lesson and helps the students feel more at ease in defending or arguing a point; they are talking about ideas that the 'cartoon character' has instead of an idea or concept that 'they' came up with.

TECHNOS Marva Collins, Her Way - 0 views

  •
This is a great article about the late famed educator, Marva Collins, who advocated for less technology and more focus on non-tech problem solving. While not an opponent of using technology, she largely based her outstanding success with children on the following precept: "Though children are exposed to technology (a biology software program is used with four- and five-year-olds, for instance), it is secondary to other lessons. 'I think what most of us fail to understand is there are steps in life,' Collins explains. 'We try to teach children that you cannot skip from step 1 to step 10.'"
