Addition is the mathematical operation, symbolized by +, of calculating the sum of two numbers or quantities. Best method of addition is the left to right mental addition method. The idea is simplify, simplify and simplify the problem by breaking the lower digits and added it to the upper digits. This method can also be used for sums where you have to carry a number forward.
This slide show demonstrates some techniques that would be suitable for an experimental geometry project. The basic shapes of square and circle are explored using open source Geogebra and Dr Geo geometry software. The examples includes exercises in geometric construction, novel solutions and recursive (spiral) constructions. This is mathematics that can be done without algebra. There is some algebra on slide 18, to calculate the radius and area of a semicircle inscribed in a square.
From rockets to stock markets, many of humanity's most thrilling creations are powered by math. So why do kids lose interest in it? Conrad Wolfram says the part of math we teach -- calculation by hand -- isn't just tedious, it's mostly irrelevant to real mathematics and the real world. He presents his radical idea: teaching kids math through computer programming.
A Flash-based interactive resource where students complete a set of challenges based around designing a park and greening a fictional city at its environmental centre. The challenges involve a variety of skills and are followed by more of a straight math calculation to reinforce connections.
Forthcoming July 2011, available for pre-order. a biography of the 13th century Italian mathematician Leonardo of Pisa, better known as Fibonacci, who introduced the Hindu-Arabic system of numbers to the west. "Fibonacci's book Liber Abbaci (The Book of Calculation) was the first to recognize the power of the 10 numerals, and to aim them at the world of commerce."
A US Federal Appeals Court rejects software patents unless "if the math in question complicated enough that "as a practical matter, the use of a computer is required" to perform the calculations"
Make thousands of printable maths worksheets on many areas of the curriculum, such as basic calculations with + - x ÷, time, measure and money.

Great site for having students calculate some proportions and develop proportional reasoning from a variety of contexts. Based in KY but can still connect to many students.
I love the Wolfram Alpha site, if it does ignite another math war, then I'm OK with it. I think what it means is that we have to ask students different questions, ask them better questions, make them create their own problems, interpret their answers, decide what methods are most efficient and why, but don't stop asking them questions just because some are going to use the available tools.
