Given that a large percentage of students have difficulty with math. The usability of a math e-learning tool is critical. The easier and more user friendly such an application is the more a student can forget about the e-learning tool and focus on learning the math content. Here is the usability report that was undertaken in the National E-Learning Lab at the National College of Ireland. This is a useful read for users of the Beta version along with Instructional Designers and Software Developers who are involved in similar projects.

The aim of SAIDE ACEMaths project was to pilot a collaborative process for the selection, adaptation and use of OER materials for teacher education programmes in South Africa. Over a period of two years we adapted, piloted and revised a set of materials on the teaching and learning of maths for teacher education. These are now available for downloading FOR FREE in two formats - for printing (PDF), and for adaptation (Word). See the ACEMaths Module to have a look.

Mathematics has a reading protocol all its own, and just as we learn to read literature, we should learn to read mathematics. Students need to learn how to read mathematics, in the same way they learn how to read a novel or a poem, listen to music, or view a painting.

Abstract: "We encounter mathematical problems in various forms in our lives, thus making mathematical thinking an important human ability [6]. Of these problems, optimization problems are an important subset: Wall Street traders often have to take instantaneous, strategic decisions to buy and sell shares, with the goal of maximizing their profits at the end of a day's trade. Continuous research on game-based learning and its value [2] [3] led us to ask: can we develop and improve the ability of mathematical thinking in children by guising an optimization problem as a game? In this paper, we present Bublz!, a simple, click-driven game we developed as a first step towards answering our question."

Abstract: "Shoot x Shoot is the first game for EduTurtle. It's a 6th grade Math game that combines topics like "Multiples", "Cartesian Plane", "International and English measurement systems", "Percentages and fractions". Through a pre game test we obtain a score of the students on the subjects then is a game time and before this time we measure again with a similar test the score of the students in order to measure an influence of the game on the students about this subjects. The online platform EduTurlte offers educational games for elementary schools children. In a near future at http://www.eduturtle.com girls and boys may come to play (and at the same time learn and reinforce their knowledge) by keeping track of their progress in games on various topics at different grades. From the abstract: :The first aim of this discussion is to suggest a framework for designing serious games based on game features in commercial games, opinions of fourth graders and their teachers, literary studies, contemporary learning theories, as well as successful and unsuccessful similar endeavours. The second part of this paper describes a concrete example of a maths game based on the proposed framework that implicitly tests math and collaboration skills. The game is made of three components: the game itself, a social network, and a teacher reporting tool. Despite a growing interest in GBL, some teachers are reluctant to use serious games in school. To increase usage of serious games as resource, it is important to equip teachers with information and address their concerns. The paper concludes with the idea that serious games need to be designed well in order to provide the immersion and collaborative active learning that most learning theories recommend."

Understanding mathematics and solving the assignments are tremors for some students. Moreover, mathematics is a subject, which the students easily cannot leave behind. This calls a help from a maths tutors, who will not only help in increasing the grades and ranking of the student, but also make the base of the subject clear to them

abstract: "A large number of studies carried out on pupils aged 8-14 have shown that teachable agent (TA) based games are beneficial for learning. The present pi- oneering study aimed to initiate research looking at whether TA based games can be used as far down as preschool age. Around the age of four, theory of mind (ToM) is under development and it is not unlikely that a fully developed ToM is necessary to benefit from a TA's socially engaging characteristics. 10 preschool children participated in an experiment of playing a mathematics game. The partic- ipants playing a TA-version of the game engaged socially with the TA and were not disturbed by his presence. Thus, this study unveil exciting possibilities for further research of the hypothesised educational benefits in store for preschoolers with regard to play-and-learn games employing TAs."
