Saving the Sports Complex Algebra Project - 3 views

  •
An algebra project focusing on a theme which interests students is more likely to engage them in the project, so lets take a look at sports. Many students participate in sports at some level, whether as part of a school team or a community team. For the most part these same students do not understand the costs involved to host the sport. Also, they do not understand how much money is needed to ensure a profitable season so the sport can continue from year to year.

Promising Practices in Undergraduate Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics ... - 7 views

  •
"the National Research Council (NRC) convened two public workshops to examine the impact and effectiveness of selected STEM undergraduate education innovations. This volume summarizes the workshops, which addressed such topics as the link between learning goals and evidence; promising practices at the individual faculty and institutional levels; classroom-based promising practices; and professional development for graduate students, new faculty, and veteran faculty. The workshops concluded with a broader examination of the barriers and opportunities associated with systemic change."

Mathematics Teacher Noticing: Seeing Through Teachers' Eyes (Paperback) - Routledge - 8 views

  •
Mathematics Teacher Noticing is the first book to examine research on the particular type of noticing done by teachers---how teachers pay attention to and make sense of what happens in the complexity of instructional situations. In the midst of all that is happening in a classroom, where do mathematics teachers look, what do they see, and what sense do they make of it?

Magical Mathematics: The Mathematical Ideas that Animate Great Magic Tricks. - 19 views

  •
Book to be published in November 2011
  •
Published in 2011, "reveals the secrets of amazing, fun-to-perform card tricks--and the profound mathematical ideas behind them--that will astound even the most accomplished magician. ... Each card trick introduces a new mathematical idea, and varying the tricks in turn takes readers to the very threshold of today's mathematical knowledge. For example, the Gilbreath Principle--a fantastic effect where the cards remain in control despite being shuffled--is found to share an intimate connection with the Mandelbrot set. Other card tricks link to the mathematical secrets of combinatorics, graph theory, number theory, topology, the Riemann hypothesis, and even Fermat's last theorem." Glean ComboCoin - Multiplication Learning and Teaching using coins - 10 views

  •
Inspired by the work of Magdeline Lampert, interactive problems offer educators a fun tool to help learners think about "mathematical principles" within the familiar context of coinage. We love her idea that playing with combinations and recombinations of denominations promotes engagement with multiplicative thinking, and have produced this as a result.
