Skymeter Corp eveloped a technology that uses GPS to trigger a small electronic meter fitted to the car and automatically sends the charges to the driver's account. The concept of charging works the same as automatic toll-road systems, which many people are already familiar with. However, the GPS technology is more versatile and enables the meter to charge according to zone or kilometre driven. Nov 23, 2009

The UAE's Ministry of Economy (MoE) and Canada's MaRS Discovery District of Toronto, Ontario, and Sustainable Development Technology - Canada (SDTC) signed separate memorandums of understanding (MoUs) to enhance business ties. The strategic partnership is aimed at fostering innovation and accelerating growth of small and medium enterprises (SMEs), in accordance with the UAE's strategy to build competitive knowledge-based economy.

Headed by Executive Director, Susan McGill, JOLT will select up to 15 high-potential startups annually, providing them with space, seed financing and mentorship, as well as access to partners and some of the top angel and venture capital investors in the industry.

MaRS announced the creation of JOLT, a new technology accelerator dedicated to building high-growth web and mobile companies that promise to transform the way consumers and enterprises connect, work and play. JOLT will select up to 15 high-potential startups annually, providing them with space, seed financing and mentorship, as well as access to partners and some of the top angel and venture capital investors in the industry. The goal of the program is to accelerate market validation and, in turn, help these companies secure the capital and talent necessary to scale efficiently.

JOLT was created by MaRS and is a new technology accelerator dedicated to building high-growth web and mobile companies that promise to transform the way consumers and enterprises connect, work and play. Applications for the JOLT program are being accepted until May 30. JOLT also announced that the program has joined the U.S.-based Global Accelerator Network, a group of accelerators from around the world which was founded in 2010.

The Working Group, Media Profile, Global Accelerator Network and Postmedia Network Inc. have also partnered with JOLT. JOLT was created by MaRS and is a new technology accelerator dedicated to building high-growth web and mobile companies that promise to transform the way consumers and enterprises connect, work and play.

Christine Wong, IT Business reported states "Geminare was granted the first ever patent for recovery-as-a-service cloud technology five long years after first developing it." Geist, President & CEO of Geminare has been involved in mentoring start-ups at MaRS. 

Christine Dobby, Financial Post reporter states "Plug and Play Tech Center in Silicon Valley and Calgary-based Boast Capital announced the launch of Startup Camp Canada, which will offer technology startups US$25,000 in funding plus 10 weeks of incubation time in the Valley and a further stint north of the border in the fall."

Flybits is a MaRS Innovation spinoff company from Ryerson University. Flybits has developed an innovative, context-aware software as a service framework called FARE (Flybits Activity Recognition Engine). "Flybits CEO and Founder Hossein Rahnama was among the entrepreneurs of Ryerson University's Digital Media Zone to meet the Prince of Wales and demonstrate his cloud-based and context-aware software solution."

Wave Accounting co-founder and chief technology officer James Lochrie, and the MaRS Discovery District incubator in Toronto are the Canadian nominees for the 2012 Small Business Influencer Awards.

Greg Meckback, Digital Media Editor from Daily Commercial News states "Toronto real estate developer Tridel is partnering with Cisco Systems Inc. to use Internet Protocol (IP) technology to improve energy efficiency, security and entertainment systems in its buildings....TowerLabs with Tridel co-founded with the MaRS Discovery District, is getting feedback from focus groups on devices such as programmable thermostats or the possibility of putting programmable thermostat functions on a portable electronic device such as Apple Inc.'s iPhone."

"Getting Bought by Google: Or another technology heavyweight" is a discussion about what it takes to be picked up or noticed by the big dogs and was held at the MaRS Centre.

In 2010-2011, 77 Canadian tech firms were acquired by foreign companies, mostly American, according to Branham Group, a research firm that closely follows the tech sector.
