Grade 12 students from St. Elizabeth Catholic High School won first place prize in the 2009 Sanofi-Aventis BioTalent Challenge (SABC) in the Greater Toronto region. These students' research demonstrated that high frequency ultrasound could be used to test the effectiveness of a cancer therapy drug by detecting cell death in leukemia cells. MaRS is one of the Regional competition sponsors.

Mention of the Let's Talk Science All Science Challenge is taking place at the MaRS Centre, May 19. All Science Challenge - a science quiz competition for Grade 6, 7 and 8 students from over 15 schools in the greater Toronto area. Designed by students for students, it's a fun-filled day of competition and camaraderie that's part of a nationwide program to excite and inspire the next generation of scientists.

The Martin Prosperity Institute, in partnership with the Ontario Ministry of Culture, and the City of Toronto - Economic Development, Culture & Tourism Division, will be hosting the inaugural Placing Creativity Conference at MaRS June 9-11, 2009. The conference will look at the interconnection between 'Place' and 'Creativity' through a number of different lenses.

The MaRS Centre is part of a medical and technology business incubator located near the University of Toronto. The modern spaces include boardrooms, lecture spaces, meeting and event spaces, and it is designed for technology-focused and more intimate corporate meetings.

On October 5th, MobileMonday Toronto will host a Global Mobile Leadership Summit with a panel of veteran business leaders who will share their knowledge, thoughts and experiences on opportunities and challenges for Canada to become more of a global leader in mobile and communications. Five architectural teams face the challenge of reinventing a site considered to be Toronto's birthplace. Adamson Associates Architects is on the short listed firms. Mention of Adamson being responsible for the restoration and renovation of the MaRS Centre at College and University. The project included the reformation of the College Wing of the historic Toronto General Hospital and stitching that into contemporary buildings and public atrium space.

MaRS Discovery has a new exhibit called Insulin: Toronto's Gift to the World.The exhibit is a joint effort of the Faculty of Medicine, the MaRS Discovery commercialization initiative and the University Health Network, a group of U of T teaching hospitals.

The Small Business and Tourism Branch has produced, in collaboration with professors Eileen Fischer (York University) and Rebecca Reuber (University of Toronto), a report that provides a portrait of the state of entrepreneurship in Canada. It charts entrepreneurial activity in Canada over time and compares it with leading countries. Entrepreneurial performance indicators observed include: birth and death rates, survival rates, high-growth firms and gazelles, and research and development expenditures. Furthermore, the report provides a profile of the owners of Canadian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) because important entrepreneurial activity takes place within these firms. Finally, the report identifies areas of strength, areas for improvement, and important areas that cannot currently be addressed.
