As underwater noise from ship traffic increases, profound effects on the marine environment highlight the need for improved mitigation measures. One measure, reduction in ship speed, has been shown to be one of the key drivers in reducing sound source levels of vessels. In 2017, a study began to assess the impacts of increasing commercial shipping traffic on sperm whales in Northwest Providence Channel, northern Bahamas, an international trade route that primarily serves the southeast US. Ship data were collected from an Automatic Identification System (AIS) station combined with recordings from an acoustic recorder to measure underwater sound levels and to detect the presence of sperm whales. Here we analyze a subset of these data to opportunistically investigate potential changes in ship traffic before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. These data span one calendar year from October 2019 to October 2020. A pre-COVID-19 dataset of 121 days, from a recorder approximately 2 km from the shipping route was compared to a 134-day dataset collected during COVID-19 from the same site, comprising 2900 and 3181 ten-minute recordings, respectively. A dramatic decrease in ocean noise levels concurrent with changes in shipping activity occurred during the pandemic. The mean pre-COVID-19 power density level in the 111-140 Hz 1/3-octave band was 88.81 dB re 1 μPa (range 81.38-100.90) and decreased to 84.27 dB re 1 μPa (range 78.60-99.51) during COVID-19, equating to a 41% reduction in sound pressure levels (SPL). After differences in seasonal changes in wind speed were accounted for, SPL decreased during the pandemic by 3.98 dB (37%). The most notable changes in ship activity were significantly reduced vessel speeds for all ship types and fewer ships using the area during the pandemic. Vessel speed was highly correlated to SPL and the only ship-based variable that predicted SPLs. Despite the opportunistic nature [i.e., not a standard before-after-control-impact (BACI) stud
Salvors have been contacted to try and locate the 40-year-ol El Faro boxship which authorities presumed sank near the Bahamas as the ferocious Hurricane Joaquin passed through the region on October 1. Yesterday, the US's National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) issued a preliminary report on its investigation into accident with scant new details bar the …
U.S. Coast Guard investigators on Monday resumed a probe of last year's deadly sinking of the El Faro off the Bahamas, beginning two weeks of hearings to examine the cargo ship's operations, weather forecasts and regulatory oversight.
The National Transportation Safety Board will launch a mission to recover a voyage data recorder that was located on April 26 in about 15,000 feet of water near the Bahamas.
The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has announced that the Voyage Data Recorder (VDR) of sunken cargo vessel El Faro has been successfully recovered. A deep ocean remotely operated underwater vehicle, CURV-21, equipped with special technology was used to perform the recovery. It was transported to the sinking site off the Bahamas by ocean …
The captain of the ill-fated U.S. cargo ship that sank in a hurricane off the Bahamas with no survivors last week was an experienced and highly trusted mariner who had spent a lifetime on the water, friends and colleagues said.
Missing cargo ship El Faro, hit by powerful Hurricane Joaquin, is believed to have sunk off the Bahamas and one presumed crew member is confirmed dead, the U.S. Coast Guard said on Monday.
The family of a crew member missing from the El Faro cargo ship is seeking $100 million in a negligence and wrongful death lawsuit against the owners and captain of the ship that sank off the Bahamas in a hurricane two weeks ago.
The cargo ship El Faro broke up partially when it sank off the Bahamas in a hurricane last month and its bridge and voyage data recorder are missing, U.S. authorities said on Tuesday.
A U.S. salvage team ended its search off the Bahamas for the missing voyage data recorder of the cargo ship El Faro which sank with its mostly American crew in a hurricane last month, officials said on Monday.
A large ship found in deep water off the Bahamas is the lost freighter El Faro that sank with 33 crew members in a hurricane last month, U.S. authorities said on Monday.
The captain of the U.S. cargo ship El Faro reported "a hull breach" and said a hatch had blown open before the vessel sank off the Bahamas in a hurricane earlier this month, the National Transportation Safety Board said on Tuesday.
