Port Of Rotterdam Named The Best Port Infrastructure In The World - @MarineInsight - 0 views

  •
The Netherlands has the best port infrastructure in the world. This is what the World Economic Forum says in 'The Global Competitiveness Report 2015-2016'. It is the fourth consecutive time that our country has come first. Like last year, Singapore came second and the United Arab Emirates held on to third place. Belgium remained in sixth position and Germany fourteenth.

Drowned toddler becomes first 2016 migrant casualty in the Aegean - @AFP via @YahooNews - 0 views

  •
From Yahoo News: A drowned two-year-old boy became the first known migrant casualty of the year on Saturday after the crowded dinghy he was travelling in slammed into rocks off Greece's Agathonisi island, the coastguard said. The rubber vessel had set off from Turkey in the early morning in windy weather. The charity Migrant Offshore Aid Station (MOAS), which helps save migrants and refugees at sea, deployed its fast-rescue Responder boat to help bring the stranded passengers to safety in a joint operation with the Hellenic coastguard.

Study identifies which marine mammals are most at risk from increased Arctic ship traff... - 0 views

  •
In August 2016, the first large cruise ship traveled through the Northwest Passage, the northern waterway linking the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The following year, the first ship without an icebreaker plied the Northern Sea Route, a path along Russia's Arctic coast that was, until recently, impassable by unescorted commercial vessels.

Declining Vigilance Threatens to Increase Martime Piracy - @Piracy_OBP - 0 views

  •
Despite reduced activity in the Western Indian Ocean Region in recent years, pirate networks responsible for the original Somali piracy crisis have sustained themselves through small-scale attacks and involvement in an array of maritime crimes. The spate of attacks over the last few months off the Horn of Africa, apparently triggered by perceived vulnerability in vessels transiting the area, may point to an elevated risk for a return of piracy. This is a key issue raised in the State of Maritime Piracy 2016, published today by Oceans Beyond Piracy (OBP). This annual reportanalyzes the human and economic impacts of maritime piracy and robbery at sea off the Horn of Africa, in the Gulf of Guinea, Asia, and for the first time, Latin America.

Exploring China's Unmanned Ocean Network - @AsiaMTI - 0 views

  •
China has deployed a network of sensors and communications capabilities between Hainan Island and the Paracel Islands in the northern South China Sea. These capabilities are part of a "Blue Ocean Information Network" (蓝海信息网络) developed by China Electronics Technology Group Corporation (CETC), a state-owned company, to aid in the exploration and control of the maritime environment using information technology. The network constructed in the northern South China Sea between early 2016 and 2019 is referred to as a demonstration system. However, future plans for the Blue Ocean Information Network involve expanding the sensor and communications network to the rest of the South China Sea, the East China Sea, and other ocean areas far from Chinese territory. While the Blue Ocean Information Network is largely cast as an environmental monitoring and communications system, the military utility of its sensing and communications functions makes its development important to monitor.

Large Vessel Activity and Low-Frequency Underwater Sound Benchmarks in United States Wa... - 0 views

  •
Chronic low-frequency noise from commercial shipping is a worldwide threat to marine animals that rely on sound for essential life functions. Although the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration recognizes the potential negative impacts of shipping noise in marine environments, there are currently no standard metrics to monitor and quantify shipping noise in U.S. marine waters. However, one-third octave band acoustic measurements centered at 63 and 125 Hz are used as international (European Union Marine Strategy Framework Directive) indicators for underwater ambient noise levels driven by shipping activity. We apply these metrics to passive acoustic monitoring data collected over 20 months in 2016-2017 at five dispersed sites throughout the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone: Alaskan Arctic, Hawaii, Gulf of Mexico, Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument (Northwest Atlantic), and Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary (Northeast Pacific). To verify the relationship between shipping activity and underwater sound levels, vessel movement data from the Automatic Identification System (AIS) were paired to each passive acoustic monitoring site. Daily average sound levels were consistently near to or higher than 100 dB re 1 μPa in both the 63 and 125 Hz one-third octave bands at sites with high levels of shipping traffic (Gulf of Mexico, Northeast Canyons and Seamounts, and Cordell Bank). Where cargo vessels were less common (the Arctic and Hawaii), daily average sound levels were comparatively lower. Specifically, sound levels were ∼20 dB lower year-round in Hawaii and ∼10-20 dB lower in the Alaskan Arctic, depending on the season. Although these band-level measurements can only generally facilitate differentiation of sound sources, these results demonstrate that international acoustic indicators of commercial shipping can be applied to data collected in U.S. waters as a unified metric to approximate the influence of shipping as a driver of

Ship Biofouling as a Vector for Non-indigenous Aquatic Species to Canadian Arctic Coast... - 0 views

  •
Ship biofouling is a major vector for the introduction and spread of harmful marine species globally; however, its importance in Arctic coastal ecosystems is understudied. The objective of this study was to provide insight regarding the extent of biofouling (i.e., percent cover, abundance, and species richness) on commercial ships operating in the Canadian Arctic. A questionnaire was used to collect information on travel history, antifouling practices, and self-reported estimates of biofouling extent from ships operating in the region during 2015-2016. Twenty-five percent of ships operating in the region during the study period completed the questionnaire (n = 50). Regression trees were developed to infer the percent cover of biofouling, total abundance of fouling invertebrates, and fouling species richness on respondent ships based on previous underwater wetted surface assessments of commercial ships in Canada. Age of antifouling coating system was the only significant predictor of percent cover and total abundance of biofouling invertebrates, while the number of biogeographic realms previously visited and port residence time were significant predictors for fouling species richness. Comparison of relevant travel history features reported through the questionnaire to the regression tree models revealed that 41.9% of 43 respondent ships had antifouling coating systems older than 630 days and are therefore inferred to have relatively high (> 9.3%) biofouling percent cover. More than half of respondent ships (62.8%) had antifouling coating systems older than 354 days and are therefore inferred to have a relatively high total abundance (over 6,500 individuals) of fouling invertebrates. Nearly half of respondent ships (45.9% of 37 ships) had visited at least three biogeographic realms during their last 10 ports-of-call and are therefore inferred to have relatively high fouling species richness (mean 42 taxa). Self-reported estimates of biofouling cover were unreliable,
