Award-winning War in Afghanistan photo series raises debate: Is photojournalism an obje... - 2 views

"Here is a link to New York Times photographer Damon Winter's photo series, "A Grunt's Life", which won the third place award in the Pictures of the Year International "Feature Picture Story - Newspaper" contest. No one seems to be questioning the quality of Winter's work; rather, there was been a stir of debate regarding the series' lack of objectivity in capturing the "reality" of the War in Afghanistan. Does the old school, discolored, oversaturated, plastic toy camera feel of the photographs, which was created through the Hipstamatic app on Winter's iPhone, detract from their validity? "

"What's the real lifespan, or "shelf life" of a photographic print? Do ink-jet based prints last longer than prints made with traditional photo chemical-based processes? As a photographer selling prints, should you know the answers to these questions?"

Africa through a lens is a set of thousands of images taken from a broader photographic collection of Foreign and Commonwealth Office images, held at The National Archives. Starting with some incredible early photographs from the 1860s, the images span over 100 years of African history. These images are now available, for the first time, to view online.

"The fascinating field of digital forensics couldn't be more relevant for a journalist, researcher or editor. Specialised analysts can test the authenticity of a photograph: how many times has it been saved? Have additions been made to the original, and if so, in which order? Are parts of the image generated by a computer? Professor Hany Farid, based at the Department of Computer Science at Dartmouth College in the US, explains that photo forensics refers to mathematical and computational techniques "that seek to determine if a photo has been altered from its time of recording, and how/where the photo was altered. "This field of study is highly technical, and while some simple analysis can be done without much technical training, most of the forensic techniques require a highly skilled practitioner.""
