Tech Supported Tools to Foster Kids' Creativity - 0 views

  •
"In our last post we described how theories of creativity and learning should be integrated with creative problem solving approaches to address our nation's creativity crisis. Recent advances in technology are enabling creators of children's digital media to design more experiences that foster children's creativity and learning. Although children's digital media producers are beginning to create products for children that are marketed as creative tools, there is still a lack of mechanisms that have fully captured the type of open-ended, imaginative play that is proven to foster the roots of creativity in children."

Our students have been studying the books by author/illustrator Peter H. Reynolds. For this project, the students made a video that reinterpreted the books, using greenscreen technology to insert photos of themselves as the characters in the stories. The kids made their own artworks, selected their own props, posed themselves based on the artwork in the book, took their pictures with a digital camera, and recorded themselves reading the text! On Thursday, May 12th, 2011, our entire school participated in a Skype video chat with Mr. Reynolds, and got to interact with him and ask him questions. Mr. Reynolds share some of his personal stories with our kids and encouraged them to continue to foloow their own creative endeavors.

. Storybird is a great site that fosters creative student writing, and I have enjoyed great success when using it in class (click here for my tutorial on the site... click here or here to see some student work). During the conversation, Mr. Ury mentioned that the site had recently opened up a fundraising option. I was intrigued and decided almost immediately that I would make a Storybird fundraiser a priority going in to the 2011-12 school year.

The Anti-Coloring Book App on the App Store on iTunes - 1 views

"The Young at Art® philosophy, as set forth in the books of the same name emphasizes that children's art is not a "frill", not merely "charming" but the very foundation upon which all education can be built. It was first introduced with the publication in 1978 of The Anti-Coloring Book®, railing against the proliferation of stifling "art" activities consisting of drawings created by adults that children were expected to merely color in; neatly and within the lines. The Anti-Coloring Books don't merely burst free of those lines, but eliminates them completely!"
