Share My Lesson - Free K-12 Resources By Teachers, For Teachers - 0 views

  •
This seems to be a tremendous collaborative resource where one can gain feedback from others on his/her own lesson approaches....as well as gather instructional ideas from other educators within any particular subject/grade level. Seems to be a broad and expansive warehousing location for ideas/lessons/strategies.

Three Great Mobile Mind Mapping Apps | PCWorld Business Center - 0 views

  •
This article covers three applications on smart phones that are great for mind mapping. The applications on the iPod, iPod, and Android are free, but the BlackBerry application costs $17. I have never used a mind mapping tool on my phone, but this article is very interesting which helps explain more Web 2.0 tools.

ALEKS -- Assessment and Learning, K-12, Higher Education, Automated Tutor, Math - 0 views

We have used this program at our school and specifically in our Alt Ed program to meet some of our program's unique needs. Since math is a little different curricular animal, being incrementally comprehensive, it has become a valuable tool. We use it to meet remedial and even for direct instructional purposes. It is not free however, as licencing is required based on projected student enrollments.

Video Slideshow Maker with Music - 0 views

We discussed this video creation tool (Animoto) during one of our classes. I have since experimented with it and highly recommend that it be considered as a potential classroom video production tool. Educators can apply for 6 month free accounts (which may include up to 50 student accounts). It's ease of use and mild learning curve would certainly be appealing for use with primary students, or use as an experimental production tool for projects with students of any age.

Free Technology for Teachers: 47 Alternatives to Using YouTube in the Classroom - 2 views

  •
This article talks about many different resources available to teachers to use in the classroom when YouTube is not available as some school districts block it. The only one I have used is Hulu because I enjoy catching up on television shows online, but looking over this list makes me realize there are many tools for showing videos to students. I think it would be easier to use one of these instead of showing an old video tape on the television for several reasons including you could post the links online so students who miss class can watch them which is not always possible when you use regular videos.

Great lists. I have used a few of these sites. I have watched Ted Talks several times, but I tend to use it for my personal growth rather than in the classroom. How Stuff Works and The Future Channel are both great sites to use in the classroom. I have used both as a launch into a lesson. I have The Future Channel set up to notify me when new videos are available.

I wish the title didn't say "alternatives to youtube" but rather, "47 video sites - OTHER THAN Youtube." Youtube is powerful for its content, most of which is not available on the other sites. This harkens back to when schools would say, "We block youtube but we have teacher tube." It's not about having a 'tube.' It's about the content. Maybe I'm picking too much, but it drives me up a wall! :-)

Education World: Teacher Tools & Templates - Venn Diagram - 0 views

  •
Ran across this site, which provides free templates for any teacher looking for new forms, certificates (praise notices), calendars, organizers, assessment grids, etc. This could help save a great deal of time...not having to recreate the wheel or start a new from scratch. If not interested in using any featured, still a nice resource to gain ideas for clerical forms or visual aids.

Texting With Teachers Keeps Students in Class -- THE Journal - 0 views

  •
I stumbled upon this neat article that looks about teacher to student communication 2.0 where communication is done with cell phones that are free to students in a school in Canada. The pilot program in a 10th grade class helped improve grades and attendance. One teacher even used the cell phones to send out a daily journal topic before class. I was very surprised by this article because this idea never even occurred to me as a way of communication in education with students. I personally think it is a good idea for high school students because it can allow for students to increase how they are connected to their education, and hold them more accountable. I thought the school took the right approach with a strict policy being explained right at the start of the pilot. I am very curious what the teachers in the class think about this program.
