What are some of the benefits we are seeing? We are seeing that the iPad often encourages interactivity. Students will share a lot of what they're doing, ask each other "How did you do that?" or, "Oh, look what I did!"  They want to problem solve together.  It encourages group discussions between the students.  They tend to help each other a lot more.  It is affordable, comparatively speaking (see below.)

Word Prediction Software – Word Prediction Software simply predicts the words that are being typed to reduce the number of keystrokes used to input the word. Once several letters of the word are typed, a list of words pops up and the student selects the correct word. Some versions of the software base the list of words on the letters keyed and other versions will base the choice on context and grammar. iPad in the classroom is not to come take over your classroom, nor is it to replace your teaching

A great way to increase acceptance and help educators to get familiar with the device is to have training classes led by an expert.

60 Apps in 60 Minutes (5) -- Brandon Lutz (6) not only has a great wiki, but also does a great presentation of apps at conferences all over the country. This wiki has links to all of his presentations and includes great overviews and tables of apps for education. iEAR Apps Review (7) -- This wonderful site run by Scott Meech (8) includes app reviews by educators for educators. App reviews are organized by category for easy searching. iPads in Schools Livebinder (9) -- Mike Fisher (10) has pulled together a ton of resources on using iPads in the classroom. There is a tab for "App of the Week" as well as a tab for "Best Free Apps." Android4Schools (11) -- This site, started by Richard Byrne (12) (of Free Tech 4 Teachers (13) fame), is dedicated to all things Android. It's a great place for educators not using iOS (aka Apple) devices or those involved in BYOD initiatives. Edutecher (14) -- A website and an app itself, this site is created and maintained by Adam Bellow (15) and allows users to search for apps by subject area and grade level.

iPads and laptops have the potential to make information and resources immediately accessible to learners, and while that was always the case with textbooks, technology makes this information more easily searchable, richer with multimedia, and potentially social beyond the classroom.

Teachers often lack the time or the resources to fully integrate iPads and laptops meaningfully, with one doing the work of the other, and little gains made over what was possible with desktops ten years ago. It is this approach that arms the naysayers in your department with justified criticism of the expense and complexity of proper technology integration.
