What is a Book Club? - 0 views

  •
"A book club, also referred to as a reading group, is a collection of readers who participate in the regular discussion of books. Traditionally, a book club consists of several members who meet in person each month to talk about a specific work. A Book Club is also... In addition to discussion-oriented book clubs described here, a book club can also be a place to purchase books. These discount book clubs offer great deals for readers who wish to purchase several books each year. Many of these are available online, where readers can use the book club's website to choose their books. However, the advent of web forums and email has made it possible for book clubs to exist online. While both traditional and online book clubs offer readers the opportunity to participate in spirited discussions, each type has its own set of advantages. Traditional book clubs offer the benefit of having all members in the same room, which makes for a much more personal and intimate experience. Since most traditional book clubs are somewhat small in size, each member typically has more control over what books are selected to read (often members will vote on a list of suggested titles that have been submitted or take turns selecting). At the same time, it is often difficult to organize and maintain a book club that meets regularly. In addition to the challenge of recruiting quality members for a book club, a regular meeting time and place may be difficult to establish, especially if members have busy schedules. Also, the small size of the traditional book club typically limits the diversity of views and perspectives that enter into the discussion. Online book clubs offer several advantages over the traditional reading group model. Due to the vastness of the web and the variety of book clubs available, readers who turn to the Internet to find a book club enjoy a much wider selection of clubs, including many dedicated to a specialized interest or genre. In addition, online book clubs

GUYS READ - 0 views

  •
"Welcome to Guys Read, a web-based literacy program for boys. Our mission is to help boys become self-motivated, lifelong readers. Research shows that boys are having trouble reading, and that boys are getting worse at reading. No one is quite sure why. Some of the reasons are biological. Some of the reasons are sociological. But the good news is that research also shows that boys will read - if they are given reading that interests them. So the biggest part of this site is the collection of book titles below. These are books that guys have told us they like. Our idea is to help guys become readers by helping them find texts they want to read. Get in there and start looking around. There is a little something for everyone. And please help guys out by recommending more of your guy-favorites."

ALA | YALSA's Book Awards and Booklists - 0 views

"Looking for great teen books? Look no further than YALSA's Book Awards and Selected Booklists. YALSA's six literary awards honor the best books for teens each year with its Alex, Edwards, Morris, Nonfiction, Odyssey, and Printz awards. In addition, YALSA publishes selected booklists each year, which offer recommended titles for both the avid and reluctant teen reader. Both the awards and booklists highlight great books for teens. Parents and caregiverss can use these lists to find good books for their teens and librarians and educators may find them useful for collection development. While these books have been selected for teens from 12 to 18 years of age, the award-winning titles and the titles on YALSA's selected lists span a broad range of reading and maturity levels. We encourage adults to take an active role in helping individual teens choose those books that are the best fit for them and their families. Want to link to this page? "These materials can be used to enrich any science curriculum and are graded for students at all levels. Energy Sourcebooks The Energy Sourcebooks are teaching guides and energy education activities to help students better understand electricity, energy, and the environment. The lesson plans were developed by TVA energy specialists working in partnership with classroom teachers and university staff. All learning activities were field-tested in schools and coordinated with state departments of education. Renewable Energy Curriculum The Renewable Energy Resources curriculum is a classroom tool developed by TVA's Public Power Institute. Its purpose is to educate children in the science and ecology of renewable energy. Learning about renewable energy resources is appropriate for any grade level. The material has been divided into three levels: elementary (grades 3-5), middle (grades 6-8), and high school (grades 9-12). You can use this material for lesson plans, demonstrations, hands-on and enrichment activities, and science fair projects. (These are PDF files that require Adobe Acrobat Reader for viewing.) Elementary School (898 kb) Middle School (1.06 mb) High School (1.10 mb) The materials correlate with TVA's renewable energy program, Green Power Switch. Water safety classes Members of Bicentennial Volunteers Inc. (BVI), a TVA retirees' group, speak to students in kindergarten through seventh grade about the importance of wearing life jackets and other water safety habits. Help spread the word about water safety by inviting BVI to speak at your school. Call BVI toll-free at 800-426-8801. "

All the News that's Fit to Tap and Swipe: Comparing news apps Flipboard, Pulse, Zite, a... - 0 views

  • Final verdict Each of these news aggregation apps has pluses and minuses; individual needs play a role in determining which is best for you. Ask yourself: Are you looking for a straightforward, visual RSS reader experience? If so, Google Currents and Pulse are the best options, with Pulse having more flexibility than Currents. What level of learning curve can you stand? If you’re ready to spend a bit of time on learning how to use the app, Zite and Flipboard are good options. How important are social features? Along with being able to share a story via Twitter or Facebook, do you want to be able to comment on a story from within the app? If so, Flipboard is a good choice. Is your interest mostly in keeping up with news followed by those you connect with on social sites? Then Flipboard or Pulse make the most sense. Will recommendations of stories that you might not find on your own be useful? The app for that is Zite.
