Jury convicts man in South Side rape - chicagotribune.com - 0 views

  • A former postal worker was found guilty Thursday in the abduction and rape of a 16-year-old girl on Chicago's South Side.
    • Seth Fahringer

Once you have a felony you can't work for the government right? Even as a postal worker?
  • A five-man, seven-woman jury found Tommie Naylor, 43, guilty of aggravated criminal sexual assault, aggravated kidnapping and criminal sexual assault in the November 2008 attack.
    • Seth Fahringer

That took awhile to find out... Can you still prosecute someone if it isn't a murder charge this long after the crime was committed?
  • The three-day trial centered on testimony from the victim — now 18 — as well as testimony from two other girls that Naylor is charged with assaulting under similar circumstances. In all, he has been accused of kidnapping and raping five girls between 2003 and 2008.
    • Seth Fahringer

How did he get a job with the postal service if his criminal record was that? Even though he was just charged... I didn't think they postal service would hire him... Or do the resumes go through the government?

  • One victim, who was 16 at the time she was raped in 2006, testified she was standing at a bus stop on 75th Street on her way to a shopping mall in the middle of the afternoon when a man she later identified as Naylor suddenly grabbed her by the arm as he brandished a screwdriver.
    • Seth Fahringer

So would that be aggravated assault and rape? What would he get for something like this?
  • Judge Stanley Sacks scheduled a June 3 hearing on post-trial motions and for the four remaining sexual assault cases against Naylor.
    • Seth Fahringer

People like this make me sick... You always need to walk in groups. Always. Why didn't anyone notice he was doing tthis before? How can someone like this sleep at night? He is a sick twisted person and I hope he goes to jail for the rest of his life.
  • "He said, 'Get in the car or I will kill you,'" then drove her to a nearby alley and sexually assaulted her, she testified.
    • Seth Fahringer

I understand she was in fear but why didn't scream? Can someone really kill you with a screw driver? Like in the back. It would be too short to reach any vital organs right? You would need a lot of force behind it to just penetrate skin.

Pa. girl, 9, found dead; neighbor faces charges  | ajc.com - 0 views

  • A 9-year-old girl who disappeared while playing outside her suburban apartment building was raped, choked and murdered by a neighbor who claimed he had a "whiteout" and just "snapped," authorities said Tuesday.
    • Seth Fahringer

This is not an excuse... It makes me wonder what he has done in his past where he just blacked out. Men like this make me sick. They don't treat their victims as people.
  • Police found the body of Skyler Kauffman in a trash bin behind the Souderton Gardens apartments about five hours after her mother reported her missing Monday evening.
    • Seth Fahringer

      This is horrible... A trashcan?!
  • Onlookers jeered as Troutman was led in and out of his arraignment at a courtroom across the street from the low-rise units where he and the victim lived.
    • Seth Fahringer

This just makes me wonder if he has done this before... I don't think this is his first time and I think he will do it again.
  • ...10 more annotations...
  • Troutman became a suspect after a detective canvassing the building spotted what appeared to be blood on his sneakers
    • Seth Fahringer

Did he even care that he did it? If he didn't care enough to clean his sneakers why did he try to hide the body?
  • Detectives also found a pool of blood in the basement of the complex.
    • Seth Fahringer

What in the world. He didn't turn himself in why?
  • Troutman eventually admitted to authorities that he strangled the girl with his hands and that her head hit the basement floor "a couple of times at least," according to the criminal complaint. Investigators said Troutman told them that "it was like whiteout" and that he "snapped."
    • Seth Fahringer

He didn't even try to deny it? that is so stupid. Why commit a crime if you have no intention of getting awya with it?
  • Across the street, a crowd of nearly 50 people yelled at him and screamed obscenities as he was led inside.
    • Seth Fahringer

I would have been one of those people... I really would have. I hate people who do this kind of stuff. He deserves the worst possible punishment.
  • "The last thing I would have thought is that they would find this child dead. This is a safe little community,"
    • Seth Fahringer

This scares me... I hate thinking that there are people out there who would do something like this. It makes me feel like my family isn't safe anymore...
  • "They were quiet, kept to themselves,"
    • Seth Fahringer

It is always that quiet ones...
  • Authorities said Troutman and Skyler had also crossed paths about three weeks ago.
    • Seth Fahringer

      Crossed paths? That sounds suspicious...
  • Skyler and a friend were near Troutman's apartment on April 18 and needed to use the bathroom. He invited them in, but they got spooked when they saw pictures of naked women on the walls, according to the complaint.
    • Seth Fahringer

Art type naked or porn? Why would they ask if they could use a strangers bathroom? That is a little weird... I never would have done that growing up.
  • Troutman then made a lewd comment, and the girls ran to leave, authorities said. Their parents reported the incident to police, but no charges were filed, a decision Ferman defended on Tuesday.
    • Seth Fahringer

And her mom still let her out unsupervised? That is crazy. I definitely would have been keeping an eye on her...
  • "Everyone did what they were supposed to," Ferman said. "The crime took place very quickly, and the body was disposed of very quickly, and I can't say that there was anything anyone else could have done that would have been able to prevent this tragic event."
    • Seth Fahringer

Except to supervise a nine year old a little bit better. I am not saying it is the mother's fault but she should have kept a better eye on the little girl... Was the mother home when it happened? The man's fiance said she heard screams in her apartment, did the mother? wouldn't a mother know the screams of her own child? Why didn't his fiance call the police when she heard the screams?

SEAL Who Killed Osama Bin Laden: Who Fired the Fatal Shot? - ABC News - 0 views

  • The world will probably never find out which Navy SEAL Team Six member fired the shot that killed Osama Bin Laden, but that has not stopped the public from wondering who this person is.
    • Seth Fahringer

Why does it matter? He is dead. I mean I see why everyone wants to know but wouldn't that be classified information?
  • As part of the elite force that took down the world's most wanted terrorist, members of Team Six are never identified, according to standard procedure.
    • Seth Fahringer

Wait nobody in the team is identified? Why not?
  • So what do we know about what "he" is like? We know the shooter is male, because all SEALs are men.
    • Seth Fahringer

      Why are all seals men?
  • ...7 more annotations...
  • He's probably about 30 years old, with a bachelors and possibly a masters degree. He is most likely white and may have a wife and children.
    • Seth Fahringer

This narrows the search down to like anybody....
  • The SEAL who delivered that deadly shot is no doubt in perfect physical shape.
    • Seth Fahringer

This is obvious. He is a Navy Seal... They all are...
  • "They have gazelle legs, no waist and a huge upper body configuration and almost a mental block that says, 'I will not fail,'"
    • Seth Fahringer

This is everyone in the Navy SEALS. This sounds so awesome. I want to be a Navy SEAL so bad.
  • But he is also most likely hiding beneath a slightly disheveled exterior. Unlike other navy SEALs, the member of SEAL Team Six who killed Osama bin Laden most likely does not appear as clean cut.
    • Seth Fahringer

Why do they say this? To hide? He will never be found out.
  • Former SEALs say this was definitely not his first mission and he may even have pieces of shrapnel or "frag" still in him from previous firefights. is hands are probably calloused from firing a weapon thousands of times.
    • Seth Fahringer

Of course it isn't his first mission! This was a highly classified mission, they wouldn't put a rookie in!
  • "Whoever was the lucky guy to make the squeeze, to take him down -- he's looking forward to the next mission,"
    • Seth Fahringer

I wouldn't be able to wait either!
  • "He was hard-assed by his teammates that it could have been done in twenty minutes. There is always that bubble of pushing for better success and expertise."
    • Seth Fahringer

I think it is pretty awesome that he killed this man in only 40 mins! It is amazing and I hope one day that I can do something as great for our country as he did.

Blood found in missing Maine mom Krista Dittmeyer's car - Crimesider - CBS News - 0 views

  • Dittmeyer's car was found with its engine running and hazard lights flashing in the Cranmore Mountain ski area parking lot in Conway
    • Seth Fahringer

Why would a kidnapper put on the hazard lights? Wouldn't that call attention to the scene? I thought the point to commit a crime was so that they could get away with it?
  • According to CBS affiliate WBZ, there is nothing to indicate that Dittmeyer left behind her car and child, who was found in the car, by choice.
    • Seth Fahringer

Was there anything to indicate that she left by force? I mean, I'm not doubting that this is a kidnapping but I also feel like there is something missing from this, like a puzzle piece is out of place...
  • "People have asked about suicide or mental illness, but there's nothing to indicate either of those things."
    • Seth Fahringer

Well they could ask the parents... Not everyone shows signs of mental illness. You never really know about people anymore do you?
  • ...1 more annotation...
  • Dittmeyer's family is offering a $3,000 reward for help finding her.
    • Seth Fahringer

Are they aloud to offer money? You always see it in movies but I didn't think you could actually do that for fear that you are committing fraud.

'Crazy' killings scare some in beach towns - CNN.com - 0 views

  • People who live near where bodies have been found said the "eerie" and "frightening" findings have left some families shaken.
    • Seth Fahringer

I bet some families are shaken... This is horrible. I wonder how many bodies have been found now. Last I heard was eight. I bet the serial killer is shaken too. They are about to be found out.
  • "My wife is scared to come home for the first time. My daughter is frightened. It's just horrible."
    • Seth Fahringer

The man is only killing hookers on craig's list... Are they thinking that that killer would expand his requirements?
  • Tourism and real estate professionals on Long Island said the apparent string of killings does not seem to have affected business.
    • Seth Fahringer

To be quite honest, I wouldn't have gone to buy a house there... That is scary stuff.
  • ...5 more annotations...
  • Police said Monday they were examining a skull found on the outskirts of a bird sanctuary in Long Island's Nassau County, potentially the ninth set of remains discovered in the probe. About four hours earlier, a New York state police officer and his cadaver dog spotted another set of remains about a mile and a half away. On Tuesday, police said both the skull and the remains were determined to be human.
    • Seth Fahringer

It is pretty obvious that they were. It isn't hard to determine that they were human. It is easy to see if something is a human skull...
  • Police have not said whether the latest remains are from two different people, nor whether they could have come from one of the other eight victims.
    • Seth Fahringer

Are the bodies limbs cut off?
  • "It kind of creeps me out, but other than that it doesn't really affect me,"
    • Seth Fahringer

Of course it doesn't, he is a man not a woman.
  • It is called dehumanization,"
    • Seth Fahringer

You always hear this in these types of cases... The serial killer is dehumanizing their victims. It isn't uncommon, why do they always say it.
  • "It shakes us up that somebody was driving along that highway over the last five years or so ... and dumping bodies," he added. "We live right down the road from where the bodies were dumped."
    • Seth Fahringer

They think the person killing the prostitutes are beig dumped from someone who lives out of state?

Victim's families outraged over Quinn's death penalty ban - chicagotribune.com - 0 views

  • But Gov. Pat Quinn's decision Wednesday to ban the death penalty in Illinois and commute the sentences of Dugan and 14 other death row inmates to life without parole left Nicarico outraged.
    • Seth Fahringer

Who would they take away the death penalty? I don't understand why...
  • "It's not just the murder of my daughter," he said by telephone from his home in South Carolina. "He murdered two other people's daughters and attacked others. This man earned it, and he's not the only one on death row who earned it."
    • Seth Fahringer

So they took away the death penalty when they had a serial killer on death row? That's pretty stupid... Why would they do that?
  • "I was really looking forward to sitting in the front row while they executed this guy," Bond said. "Now the taxpayers of Illinois have to pay his room and board."
    • Seth Fahringer

He deserved the death penalty. He really did this man was a murderer...
  • ...6 more annotations...
  • "I've already forgiven him for what he did, but I want to see justice in action," said Quincy, who is now 14.
    • Seth Fahringer

He killed a kids parents in front of him! That is horrible, why wouldn't they give him the death penalty.
  • "Just putting them to death would be too easy for the offender, so I figure it would be more of a punishment to let them rot in jail for the rest of their lives,"
    • Seth Fahringer

He would rather pay this killer's room and board then sentence him to death? Isn't death supposed to like the ultimate punishment?
  • Andrew Urdiales has now been cleared from death row twice.
    • Seth Fahringer

Twice... Are you serious? If you do the crime you do the time right? What is wrong with this Governor?
  • His family and attorneys had hoped his life would be spared on the grounds that he is mentally ill
    • Seth Fahringer

He was not mentally ill. He was in the marines. They do not accept the mentally ill. Unless the are claiming PTSD then they have nothing on that. This article has false information.
  • Richard Runge, whose son, Paul, was on death row for the 1997 rape and murder of a mother and her 10-year-old daughter, was "elated" that his son's life would be spared.
    • Seth Fahringer

These are the people this Governor let off. These are the people who get to live the rest of their lives but do their victims? No they don't.
  • But such feelings were not shared by Rachel Williams, who still has bullet fragments in her skull from the night in 1996 when Daniel Ramsey shot her in the head, killed her 12-year-old sister, raped and killed her best friend, and wounded two toddlers.
    • Seth Fahringer

Wow.... That doesn't even... I have no words to describe what this man did. That is horrible.

Tokyo Issues Tap Water Warning for Infants - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  • The Japanese authorities are considering a plan to import bottled water from overseas
    • Seth Fahringer

They already had a great loss of money and now they have to have water imported? How much does it cost to buy water for all of Japan?
  • importing water was among the options under discussion.
    • Seth Fahringer

What other options do they have? Importing water is really the only choice they have. The water is probably too contaminated to even touch with your bare skin. Its unsafe and we need to get water over there.

Sheriff: Kidnap victim held in 'house of horrors' | Dallas - Fort Worth News | wfaa.com... - 0 views

  • They found her about 100 miles away in Corsicana, where she had been held captive.
    • Seth Fahringer

How did Corsicana authorities know to search for her? I didn't know that they expand their search so far now.
  • Investigators were still hauling out possible evidence Monday morning... and still reeling from what they found in a small lake house near the Navarro County seat.
    • Seth Fahringer

What were they finding? What kind of torture devices?
  • He said it appears that Maxwell kidnapped and then tortured the 62-year-old woman for 13 days.

That took a lot of guts to do... Especially for someone scared for her life...
  • "I hope I never see it again," Fowler said grimly. "To me, it was a house of horrors."
    • Seth Fahringer

Oh my goodness! WHAT DID THEY FIND?! WHAT KIND OF TORTURE DID SHE GO THROUGH?
  • an 'rolling pin'
  • Maxwell said he then took the victim to his garage and "...strung her up in a homemade device used for skinning deer." This pulled her up off the ground.
    • Seth Fahringer

Why did he do this? Was it aggravated? Does he have something wrong with him?
  • The sheriff said Maxwell returned to Parker County two days after the abduction and burned the victim's house down.
    • Seth Fahringer

Ummm... Why? That's crazy... Why did he do that? What was accomplished in doing this?
  • and was remembered for harassing her several years ago.
    • Seth Fahringer

So was this premeditated? This man is sick. Why is he so obsessed with woman? Did she do something to him? What is wrong with him?
  • "It's a shocker," said Teddy Robinson, a neighbor of the suspect. "I would have never dreamed that something like this could happen next door."
    • Seth Fahringer

Everyone says this... I think the shock factor should have been gone awhile ago... I mean America is so desensitized why is it still a shock that there are sick people?
  • Jeffrey Maxwell's neighbors called him a "loner."
    • Seth Fahringer

I only have one thing to say about this... It is always the quiet ones... I would have suspected something was off about him. At least I hope I would have.
  • Especially since his picture was just in the local newspaper as vice-president of the local Kiwanis club?
    • Seth Fahringer

What is the Kiwanis club? Does it have to do with Kiwanis Lake? And if it does aren't they in California...
  • Maxwell is charged with aggravated kidnapping and aggravated sexual assault.
    • Seth Fahringer

Was he going to kill her? Couldn't he be charged with attempted homicide?
  • The victim was treated and released from the hospital but Sheriff Fowler said she remains extremely traumatized.
    • Seth Fahringer

I bet she is traumatized... I can't even imagine how hurt she was.

Police Say Jorge and Carmen Barahona Beat to Death Adopted Daughter, Nubia Doctor - ABC... - 0 views

  • Victor remains in the hospital where he is receiving treatment for chemical burns that cover most of his lower body.

Wouldn't upper body be more effective? Why would they burn the lower body?
  • investigators waited for Victor to be well enough to interview, before pressing charges against the parents.
    • Seth Fahringer

This man will never be well. He is sick and twisted. He will never ever be well!
  • "Statements are being taken as we speak…. Statements were not taken right away because Victor needed a lot of medical attention," Fernandez Rundle said.

  • Nubia and Victor were placed in the Barahonas' custody in 2004 when state investigators took the twins out of their biological father's home after the man was accused of sexually abusing Nubia.
    • Seth Fahringer

That is crazy. That girl was seriously messed up wasn't she? I feel so bad for her. That is so so sad. People like this just make me so mad.
  • Nubia suffered from a cleft palate and a rare sexual dysfunction. Her treatment for the cleft palate was damaged, according to the arrest warrants.
    • Seth Fahringer

What is cleft palate? And what kind of sexual dysfunction? Isn't it disfunction?
  • Despite routine visits, state investigators repeatedly missed clues that the children were being abused in their new home.
    • Seth Fahringer

They are trained to see the signs. How could they have missed them? And UGH THEY MAKE ME SO MAD! Someone should have helped these kids!
  • In the days since the children were found, the state has removed two other children, a girl named Jennifer, 7, and a boy named George, 11, from the Barahonas' home and placed them in protective foster care.
    • Seth Fahringer

How many kids do they have? How did they even get to adopt kids? This state is horrible at seeing the signs.
  • Carmen's biological granddaughter, who made frequent visits to the Barahona home, told a school therapist about the twins' abuse, saying the children had been bound and forced to stand in a bathtub. The therapist then called a child abuse hotline.
    • Seth Fahringer

The children weren't removed from the home? There was a hotline called! Why weren't they helped?! Those hotlines are put in place for a reason!
  • A case worker in 2007 wrote: "Nubia's hunger has been uncontrollable, she sneaks and steals food, steals money, has hair loss, is very thin, nervous and jittery. Nubia also has an unpleasant odor… In the past it is believed Nubia's adoption was halted when Nubia was coming to school dirty while in the adoptive mother's care."
    • Seth Fahringer

Those are obvious signs of abuse! They were starving her! They weren't letting her bathe! How could they say nothing was wrong there?
  • "This child is very medically needy and should not be missing appointments because the foster parent does not want to take her," the report said.

They didn't know she wsa being abused? What happened to all the preventatives? Who was subhuman? Did they call her that?

How old was she? What did they do to her? Is her brother still alive?
  • Jorge Barahona, 53, is accused of punching his daughter to death on Feb 11 following a lengthy torture session in which the girl was kept bound at the hands and feet and left in a bathtub. Carmen Barahona, 60, is also charged with first degree murder.
    • Seth Fahringer

Punched to death? Like beaten to death or one deadly blow? Was being in the bathtub the torture or was the torture something worse?

  • the 10-year-old twins were subjected to months of abuse culminating in a torture session that ended with the girl's death just one day after state child welfare authorities visited the home and found no reason to intervene.
    • Seth Fahringer

How couldn't they feel the need to intervene? There had to be marks on her somewhere! She had to have been acting funny. Children who aren't abused act way differently from children who are.
  • Co-defendant [Jorge Barahona] reportedly punched and beat Nubia about her body while she screamed and cried until she was dead,"
    • Seth Fahringer

That's horrible... How could someone listen to a little girl scream and not feel terrible? He is a sick person.
  • "repeatedly hit, punched, beaten with multiple objects about their bodies and bound and left for days on end, locked inside the only bathroom in the family home..."
    • Seth Fahringer

Seriously? And nobody thought they should take these kids away? Didn't the Barahona's shower? Or use the bathroom. Did they feed the kids or give them water?
  • "depressing [and] sickening" and described the ordeal suffered by Nubia and her twin brother Victor as "very organized abuse."
    • Seth Fahringer

It is way more then "depressing [and] sickening" It is so much more. They are sick horible people.

What does he mean subhuman? Like no human behavior?
  • "the methodical, systemic, constant torture imposed on these two beautiful children."
    • Seth Fahringer

Can they be charged with premeditated? I think they should be. I think they should both get the lethal injection.
  • Barahona was initially arrested Feb. 14 after Nubia's remains were found covered in chemicals and decomposing in a bag in the back of his truck. Police found Barahona and Victor parked along a highway outside West Palm Beach, Fla. The boy, overcome by fumes and convulsing, was covered in chemical burns.
    • Seth Fahringer

What was this chemical? Was it the same one on both the boy and the girl? This boy will be extremely messed up when he grows up. I feel so bad for him. He has had a tortured life and he is only 10 years old.
  • Barahona was originally charged with aggravated child abuse and the attempted murder of Victor, but it was not until this weekend that the couple were charged with first degree murder for the death of Nubia.
    • Seth Fahringer

They should just start sentencing. They are obviously guilty. How did they justify this to themselves? Seriously... How?

What kind of 71 year old wants to be in prison? He has obviously learned his lesson. He is old, nobody knows him outside anymore. If they really wanted to punish him they should have just let him free.
  • His lawyer, William Pepper, said that Sirhan was innocent of the assassination and has been treated unfairly.
    • Seth Fahringer

Don't all lawyers have to say that? Sirhan said that he did it in his original trial. Why should it matter now?
  • From what we've seen this afternoon, we're very disappointed and we're very hurt for a man whose been spending time confined when he met every one of the criteria for suitability to be released," Pepper said.
    • Seth Fahringer

If he really did meet every one of the criteria to be eligible for parole they should have let him out. If it was a regular Joe the plumber that was killed he would have gotten parole within 20 years of his crime.

  • "They ignored everything we had to say and went on the emotional kick of losing a presidential candidate and loss of a national leader," he said

That's not fair. I admit we lost a great leader to this man however he did his time. Saying that someone has life in prison means they are eligible to get parole 20 years after their crime. He has been in for 43!
  • Sirhan, who moved to the United States with his family as a child, was initially sentenced to death for the assassination of the senator, brother to slain President John F. Kennedy.

I do not understand why this paragraph is in here... Why does it matter?
  • It was Sirhan's 14th appearance before a parole board, but it was the 13th time that he was eligible for release on parole and was denied, said Doug Roberts, a spokesman for the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
    • Seth Fahringer

Was he eligible every 5 years? Why wouldn't they pass him if he had been a model prisoner?
  • At a 2003 hearing where he was also denied parole, a state Board of Prison Terms panel found Sirhan's anger and ability to cope had worsened, and that he would pose a risk to society if released. He was denied parole again in 2006.

I don't understand. First they say he's a model prisoner and has had great improvement and behavior and now they say this. Which one is it really?
  • Pepper, has suggested that Sirhan was brainwashed to target Kennedy, telling ABC News in an interview earlier this week: "There is no question he was hypno-programed."
    • Seth Fahringer

Maybe if his lawyer would stop acting like he was crazy he would get out. Why would anyone let someone out of prison who thinks he was hypnotized?
  • At his trial, Sirhan declared that he killed Kennedy "with 20 years of malice aforethought."
    • Seth Fahringer

What kind of little kid thinks about killing a president? if this is true he started planning his killing when he was 3 years old. No 3 year old thinks about anything that complex.
  • The Palestinian-born Sirhan's motive was said to have been anger about U.S. policy in the Middle East.

This sentenced should be moved. It is a poorly written article on a very contravercial subject. However I think that Sirhan should be granted parole.

Why, or how, could someone possibly do this to their children? Most people view their children as the meaning of life. Detectives believe the children never even saw it coming. And for the evil way she did it. It's just terrible. How could any human being do such a thing to another?
  • Julie Schenecker was jailed and charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

She deserves the death penalty for what she's done to her one children. Your the one who layed down in the bed, and produce your beautiful kids. you gave birth to them. By laying in the bed, you were accepting the responsibility to have children. Then you take their lives for being mouthy?!
