This author of this article is a "travel writing" contest runner-up. This author went into Guatemala and wrote about their experiences there. They wrote this article with a series of pictures and personal stories sharing the life of Guatemala and the author's interactions with the lives of the people after the war. I thought this was an interesting resource because it not only had visuals of the idea of "life after war," but also because it shared a more personal look (instead of a reporter's interpretation).

This article tells of the extreme poverty in Guatemala and speaks particularly on what is being done for people in this area. Guatemala has the highest rate of child malnutrition in Latin American and the fourth in the world. This is because the food that the people eat, such as tortillas and beans, are lacking in protein. The people are too poor to buy beef, eggs, or chicken, which could prevent the malnutrition.

This article dicusses the murder of Rodrigo Rosenberg, a famous lawyer in Guatemala in May 2009. A few days before he was shot, Mr. Rosenberg made in a video in which he predicted his death and blamed President Álvaro Colom. Rosenberg also blamed the President for the death of his wife, the president's secretary, and other bankers and businessmen. The article goes into a description of the crime and poverty that have hit Guatemala since the civil war.

This article was written in response to the violence/crime related actions that are happening because of the increased amount of drug and substance abuse in Latin America. The article states that in January (when the article was written), the presidents of Colombia, Mexico, Guatemala, Panama were to meet in Panama to discuss what should be done and what measure should be taken to help. One major problem brought up by the article is that the instability that is happening particularly in Mexico could be a danger to the US because of the shared border.

This article discusses the change that happens when Latino men convert to Evangelical Christianity, and the effects it has on women and family life. Because Evangelical beliefs consider drinking and partying is wrong, the man stays home with his family. Women also become more confidant of speaking out against their husbands to keep them in line, and not to fall back to their old ways. An interesting point that was made in the article was the relief that men felt when going away from their machismo ways- "In Colombia, machismo is, over the long run, very demanding and difficult for all under its sway, including the males who must perform this role"

This website is an evangelical Christian fellowship that focuses in on outreach in Mexico. It tells of the opportunities available now that Mexico is no longer striving to be secular, as they were in earlier years before the revolution (because of how much control the Catholic Church had on the government). It is written for people who are looking to do missions in Mexico, but I think it is a good resource for looking at the evangelical outlook on how they see their mission in Mexico, and to compare it with the results that the Mexican people are getting out of it.

This aritcle discusses women in Latin American and how their education effects their fertility rate. Generally, poorer women who lack education have more children than richer women who had the chance of education. This is evidentally true for other cultures, but particularly for women in Latin America because men are very dominant and if a child is to be educated it is more likely to be the boy instead of a girl. The aritcle gives details about the essential need for women to have education, not only to break social bias against class, but also to promote development of countries and reducing fertility rates.

This article talks about how homosexuality is coming out more and more in Latin America, and people are becoming less afraid of the idea through the support of the government movements. It talks about how the term "macho," though still existing, is starting to give way to a more "gay-friendly" region. This article also gives a bit of history on the gay, lesbian, and bi communities and their efforts in Latin America, and how it is rapidly moving to a more accepting environment despite the religious upheaval with it.

This article contains statistics about AIDS/HIV in the world but particularly focuses on the people of Latin America because of the high rates of the disease in these areas. It talks about how Mexico, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru are all countries where it is well known that men are having sex with other men, and this increases the spread of the disease. In countries like Bolivia and Peru in particular, the spread of the disease is linked to the vast amounts of unprotected sex and the use of intravenous drugs. The article also mentions that there are many misconceptions with AIDS/HIV in regards to how it is spread and through whom and by whom, and that many people are prejudiced into a certain way of thinking.

This article is about poorer women in Peru dealing with the conflicting issues of whether birth control is right or wrong. It gives a specific example of a woman who killed 2 of her 6 children because she could not afford to take care of them anymore. The poorer people who are also Catholic are having to deal with the large amounts of children and the small amount of money. Some women are up for going to non-natural birth control meathods, but some say their husbands are afraid this will make them more promiscuous.

This website talks about the different people living in Buenas Aires in terms of their sexual orientation (and their freedom to be open about it). It gives information about the history of building of what they call a "gay-friendly" enviornment in the city, and the movements that have been in place the past couple of years. There are also links to different websites for youth, women, and the industry of entertainment.

This website is an organization called PADCA, which stands for "Programa de Atención al Desminado en CentroAmerica." This union helps the people with clearing the mines that are placed because of the turbulence in the Central American area. It also provides rehabilitation for the people that are affected by the mines.

This website has referances to different resources, publications, and museums all pertaining to the many aspects of the culture of latin america. It touches on the art and history of the latter, and has a link to a website for information on Central and South America.
