"Hyperlinks make the World Wide Web what it is. If links did not exist, EVERY web page would be a stand alone. Let's take a close look at these "clickable thingies" :)"

Add Global Perspectives to your Google Search | Langwitches Blog - 0 views

  •
"When you are multilingual, you are used to the fact that news is being reported differently (from another point of view/perspective) in different countries. Before the Internet, you only knew this, when you were traveling between countries, spoke to friends or relatives on the phone, or were able to get you hands on old media (newspapers or magazines). Since the advent of the Internet and World Wide Web, we are finally able to connect to information and web sites without having to cross any geographic borders or time zones."

Evaluating Apps with Transformative Use of the iPad in Mind | Langwitches Blog - 0 views

  •
"The app development market is exploding. More and more companies are creating "educational apps". In some cases, they are simply digital versions of a book or a web based tool. Some seem to have "no educational value" to it at all, but are still sold under the label of "education". "

World Language Students Are Poppleting | Langwitches Blog - 0 views

  •
"How do we learn vocabulary of a second, third or fourth language best? As a class, we discussed different methods including mnemonic devices and how they help us remember, organize and make connections in our brain. Some of us prefer: visual connections rhyming words acronyms a sentence in context humorous connections etc. In order to embed modern skills and literacies and connect to our school's Core Values and mission, students created Popplets. The tool (Popplet) allowed students to create a web based mind map. Each bubble/ "popplet"represented a vocabulary word related to medicine/illness/symptoms."

Bringing Copyright Awareness to the Surface | Langwitches Blog - 0 views

"Every once in a while I visit the Microsoft Office Clipart Gallery. I just realized that they have redesigned the page. It is suddenly titled "Find Images Where you Need Them" and is divided into three sections: Using the Newest Office on Your Desktop, Using Office Web App, Using Bing to get Images. It is the last section that caught my attention. Bing is a search engine, just like Google . You can read the following step-by-step directions to find images with Bing Search"

Langwitches Blog » What About That Twitter Thing? - 0 views

  •
"Last week at CMI2010, I had the opportunity to talk to presenters, as well as many participants about Twitter. I had the feeling that the teachers, administrators, and superintendents, I spoke with, were genuinely interested in learning about Twitter."

"I wrote about the power of "The Network" in Personal Learning Network Thoughts. I would say that Twitter and my blog are the most important tools to the puzzle that make up my PLN. It takes time and effort to build, grow, maintain and nurture my PLN. I get out of it what I put in it. The PEOPLE who make up my network are "IT"."

"I have been enthralled watching the following TED Talk (Ideas worth Spreading) How to Listen to Global Voices by Ethan Zuckerman: Sure, the web connects the globe, but most of us end up hearing mainly from people just like ourselves. Blogger and technologist Ethan Zuckerman wants to help share the stories of the whole wide world. He talks about clever strategies to open up your Twitter world and read the news in languages you don't even know."

Langwitches Blog » Podcasting with First Grade - 1 views

"If you have not thought of podcasting with your younger elementary school students, I encourage you to think again. The first graders at my school had listened to the second grade podcast about animals, and had really enjoyed their story. They were especially thrilled that the second graders had received so many comments from teachers around the world. Believe it or not, but having an audience matters… even to 6 year olds."

"A teacher's heart smiles when students become creative, enthusiastic and take ownership of their work. This was the case with the 4th grade class at my school. Their classroom teacher asked me to introduce podcasts to her class, she and her students took it from there and RAN… with it…"

"I came across Docs That Teach this morning " It is divided int three parts: 1) Activities 2) Documents 3) Account ... I think this site has great potential in the Social Studies and History classroom. I especially liked the CREATE area, honoring the highest level in the Bloom's taxonomy (which the site acknowledged on their Bloom's Taxonomy resource link)."

Langwitches Blog » "It Isn't the Answer Anymore, It is the Question" - 1 views

  •
"Teachers are worried that students simply "google" answers to a homework assignment or "copy and paste" entire paragraphs for research papers from the Internet. They are right. Nowadays, it is very easy, fast AND accessible to find answers. So, what do we do? * Do we punish students and fail them if they found the right answer online? * Do we spend our time and energy checking if they did not plagiarize by simply copying from another website into their papers? * Do we use services such as Plagiarism Checker or Turn It In to catch students? John Sowash, The Electric Educator, writes about Google-Proof Questioning"

Langwitches Blog » Tweeting with Elementary School Kids - 1 views

"My teachers and students at my current school have heard me talk about Twitter more than once (well… more than a hundred times would be more accurate). I have been the "middle(wo)man" between the students and their classroom teachers to make connections (For Skype calls around the World), ask for advice, disseminate a project or request feedback (CSI Twitter) . How do I move from being that sole connector and disseminator to preparing students for that role?"

Langwitches Blog » It's Not About the Tools. It's About the Skills - 1 views

"Many times, I see eyes glazing over, when I excitedly speak with parents or administrators about blogging, skyping or podcasting with students. Many of them, unfamiliar with the tools, will immediately feel uncomfortable. Some will automatically and immediately steer the conversation back to what they know: What about learning the basics, like reading, writing, math and science? I usually try to explain and emphasize, that these skills are precisely what are being taught. "
