Critical Thinking Via Infographics | Langwitches Blog - 0 views

"7th grade Geography teacher, David J. at Graded-The American School of S?o Paulo, was planning an in-depth country data study and interpretation. He decided to allow his students to explore the use of infographics to visually represent the data and compare their findings. He explained to his students: Instead of a focused, issue-based case study, the major project of the quarter will be a comparison of three countries (one from Europe, one from North or South America, and one from Africa or Asia). You will research many categories (citing sources correctly), represent the data using infographics (group collaborative component), and then provide reflection (annotations) on how and why the countries are similar or different on these topics. Additionally, students will write comments comparing their own researched countries' information to the data of other students."

Not only do visuals created by others help me make context and content clearer to me, but visuals also play a pivotal role in the process of thinking about, wrapping my mind around, developing, connecting, and making my work visible in order to share with others. I have experimented with infographics, sketchnotes, slides, and hybrid visuals. "Alan November's concept of the Digital Learning Farm, asks schools and teachers to empower students by giving them relevant responsibilities that allow them to contribute in meaningful ways to their learning community (class/school/etc.). How can we give students the opportunity to CONTRIBUTE versus completing projects that end up in the trash, bottom of their backpack or at best on the refrigerator door for display in their house."

Copyright Flowchart: Can I Use It? Yes? No? If This… Then… | Langwitches Blog - 0 views

"It is the responsibility of all educators to model good digital citizenship for their students. Especially when it comes to copyright, plagiarism and intellectual property. The waters are murky. Not being familiar with online digital rights and responsibilities (hey, teachers did not grow up with the Internet being around), educators are wading through uncharted waters (hey, I did not know that I could not just google an image to use. If someone puts it up online it is free for the taking). That does not mean they can close their eyes and pretend life is the same or that the same rules apply to online versus offline use of copyrighted material with their students."
