Do the maths - MOOCs break the mould | Story & Education Stories | The Australian - 0 views

  • THE accelerating evolution of online teaching through massive open online courses and other variations offers myriad possibilities the Australian sector can seize, especially given its reputation as a pioneer in international education. That's the conclusion of a new Austrade report, More than MOOCs. "We have looked through the prism of international demand for Australian education," senior trade and investment commissioner in the Washington office Kelly Ralston said. There were "a plethora of new opportunities (for institutions), whether to broaden their student base, to raise their profiles internationally or to continue enhancing the quality of the student experience." "It's a fast-moving landscape and it's up to each institution to assess how the new technologies and tools fit within their organisational strategy," she said. "Also Australia has a long tradition of online and distance education, we are a recognised pioneer in international education." These experiences would stand Australia in good stead. "It doesn't have to be a North American conversation," Ms Ralston said.
  • The Austrade market research is on its way to being required reading in the sector. "It is the best summary of where MOOCs stand worldwide at the moment, what developments (there) are and what they offer," University of Adelaide vice-chancellor Warren Bebbington said, although he confirmed his institution was unlikely to take that route.
  • MOOCs and other online courses give universities a showcase for their top academic talent: those who not only know their stuff but can communicate it. There are plenty of likely contenders, such as La Trobe University algebraist and ARC Future Fellow Marcel Jackson, who knows how to hit the spot with online consumers. His series The Algebra of Everything, aimed at general viewers, was No 1 on iTunes U in Australia last week and is No 4 in the US.

"We see students coming in as freshmen saying they want to be statisticians," said Robert Gould, who is on the statistics faculty at the University of California, Los Angeles. "That was unheard-of before the AP test." In a still-soft jobs market, rising demand for statisticians also has spurred interest in the field. There were 28,305 postings for jobs in statistics, analytics and, in the trendy phrase, "big data" at the jobs website icrunchdata last month, up from 16,500 three years earlier, according to Todd Nevins, a site co-founder.

From the comments: Breaking News . . . scholars at Harvard University announced today that they have made an important discovery of a new activity they are calling, "college teaching." Although not at liberty to divulge details, one senior official indicated that this new activity may have important implications for education. Scholars believe "college teaching" has something to do with student learning but they are not at all sure what that connection is. If this turns out to be true then, as one anonymous, but really famous NYT columnist said, "This is the greatest development in modern society since the ones I reported on in my last book. Fortunately, you will be able to read about it in my new book very soon."

University of Phoenix are on the right track here. "In an effort ambitiously dubbed the "Learning Genome Project," the for-profit powerhouse says it is building a new learning management system (or LMS) that gets to know each of its 400,000 students [ed. now reduced to 360,000] personally and adapts to accommodate the idiosyncrasies of their 'learning DNA.'" Elliot Masie put it nicely last week in a webinar I was on - he said self-directed learning is like a sandwich bar where customers make their own sandwiches. It is up to us to provide them with great ingredients and then stand back and let them go for it. LA enables that sandwich bar to observe its customers, analyse their needs and dynamically adapt itself to help them make a better sandwich. Cool! #LAK13

Now I just want to see a distribution of this LMS for corporate use!! #LAK13
