By Joe Wikert, part of the TOC podcast series, on O'Reilly Radar, April 2 2012. Wikert interviews Hugh McGuire, founder of PressBooks, a newly developed publishing platform. PressBooks, which will be available both to commercial publishers and to the general public, uses WordPress as a CMS/platform on which to put a book together. The output can be a printed book, an e-book, or a podcast. This page provides an intro to the podcast, including the major themes of the approach (and the time-stamps for each).

"The community platforms market has been heating up for the past few years. Today, there are more than 100 vendors in the space, and we evaluated the top 5 in our most recent Wave: Lithium, Jive, KickApps, Telligent, and Mzinga.*"
On the home page, it says, "Hieroglyph is a publication, collective conversation and incubator for the "moonshot ecosystem" bringing together writers, scientists, engineers, technologists, industrialists and other creative, synoptic thinkers to collaborate on bold ideas in a protected space for creative play, science, and imagination."
This platform is surely of interest. Uses a forum format, each of which contains a "big idea" that is described and discussed. In addition, the wiki contains curated content about the project.
Also, "The Official Social Network of the Global Education Conference." This social network, on ning, has over 9,000 members and 104 distinct groups. The Network offers the Global Education Conference, a collaborative, world-wide community initiative for students, educators and organizations at all levels. It takes place online (free) using the Blackboard Collaborate platform.
From it's About page, Protégé is an open-source platform where users can "implement a rich set of knowledge-modeling structures and actions that support the creation, visualization, and manipulation of ontologies in various representation formats."
From About, Netvibes is a "personalized dashboard publishing platform for the Web" which consumers can use as their start page. Businesses can use Netvibes to build and distribute widgets that their audience can use on their start pages.
Talkwheel is like instant messaging for a small group. Or as their materials describe, "Talkwheel creates a visual roundtable collaboration platform to allow groups in enterprises, e-learning and social networks to interact more effectively than anywhere else online."
From About Us, "OpenIDEO is a place where people design better, together for social good." Using an online platform and a very structured approach to problem-solving (inspiration, concepting, and evaluation) are followed, ideally, by implementation, all the while, harnassing the power of crowd-sourcing. See How It Works tab for a video that more effectively explains the process.
I found the video inspiring. OpenIDEO's work is very similar to ours, though they use the power of the crowd while ours is (usually) at least somewhat restricted. But I love the clearly delineated process, the idea that more is better, and the fact that each of us might be stronger in one aspect of the process than the other(s). The website, too, is inspiring, as the homepage lays out all of the projects, with a barometer to describe where each project is in the process.
Pachyderm is an easy-to-use multimedia authoring tool. Designed for people with little multimedia experience, Pachyderm is accessed through a web browser and is as easy to use as filling out a web form. Authors upload their own media (images, audio clips, and short video segments) and place them into pre-designed templates, which can play video and audio, link to other templates, zoom in on images, and more. Once the templates have been completed and linked together, the presentation is published and can then be downloaded and placed on the author's website or on a CD or DVD ROM. Authors may also leave their presentations on the Pachyderm server and link directly to them there. The result is an attractive, interactive Flash-based multimedia presentation.
We have developed powerful software and services, based on principles of organizational / social network analysis (ONA / SNA), to uncover relationship dynamics and reveal the self-organizing nature of groups.
