More than half of the 95 cases of domestic workers' deaths in Lebanon are considered "suicide," and according to a 2008 Human Rights Watch report at least one domestic worker dies in Lebanon every week.

Houri said it is only the beginning of what is yet to come. Future actions are being prepared in collaboration with more foreign domestic workers. According to Houri most of the women are afraid to appear in the media forcing workers to organize in public places such as churches or markets.

This action is the first of its kind in Lebanon, and occurs as human rights groups note a growing street-buzz about the "import market" of domestic workers from impoverished eastern African and south-eastern Asian countries.

When it comes to the lives of women around the globe, do local traditions ever trump human rights?

"There are countless cases of employers threatening, humiliating, beating, raping, and sometimes killing domestic workers," said Nisha Varia, deputy director of the women's rights division of HRW. "Governments need to punish abusive employers through the justice system, and prevent violence by reforming labour and immigration policies that leave these workers at their employers' mercy."

According to Islamic law, Al-Luhaidan said that the woman has the right to decide for herself whether to accept the suitor or not and that the legal guardian (mahram) is only responsible for her and not to interfere with her decision.
