Michigan State University has over 450,000 alumni around the world. The school's University Advancement department sought to create a representation of alumni and donor sentiment and likelihood of philanthropic engagement based on data gathered from social media. However, these analyses often took weeks to process, limiting the school's ability to gather valuable insights in a timely manner. New research from Henry Siu at the University of British Columbia and Nir Jaimovich from Duke University shows just how much the world of routine work has collapsed. The economists released a paper today, published by the centrist Democratic think tank Third Way, showing that over the course of the last two recessions and recoveries, a period beginning in 2001, the economy's job growth has come entirely from nonroutine work.

The Dunning-Kruger effect, named after David Dunning and Justin Kruger of Cornell University, occurs where people fail to adequately assess their level of competence - or specifically, their incompetence - at a task and thus consider themselves much more competent than everyone else. This lack of awareness is attributed to their lower level of competence robbing them of the ability to critically analyse their performance, leading to a significant overestimate of themselves.
