Wall Street journal / MIT Sloane Management Review article. How emerging markets are leading the way in thinking about markets in a downturn. The examples mainly come from marketing and product placement, but these are great lessons in how to think differently about an existing business model. The batteries pricing / packaging example was a neat way of presenting an existing offering in a more attractive & acceptable way during a downturn. The item about focussing on your existing customer base rather than new market opporunities got me thinking about how we use existing knowledge. The analogy works for me, because leveraging what we already know makes more sense than the cost of buying in expertise etc.

" Innovation Culture - MIT Sloane talk by the charismatic CEO, Terri Kelly. The top things I took from this inspiring talk are: - Staff turnover only 5% (the new hire process is lengthy and rigorous to ensure cultural fit) - CEO is elected by staff (CEO is one of the few job titles in the organisation - Costs are regarded as 'investments' - Every individual has a sponsor or coach - Leaders get there through others wanting to follow, not their power - Innovation culture is the MAIN driver of business results - Business units are no larger than 250 people (the founder talked about divide to multiply) - 'Give them the right tools, minimal bureaucracy, responsibility for P&L, expect people to lattice (network), organise around small teams'. A recent MIT study found that in one organization the employees with the most extensive personal digital networks were 7% more productive than their colleagues - so Wikis and Web 2.0 tools may indeed improve productivity. In the same organization, however, the employees with the most cohesive face-to-face networks were 30% more productive.

Researchers at the MIT Media Lab, think that facial recognition software has problems recognizing black faces because its algorithms are usually written by white engineers who dominate the technology sector. These engineers build on pre-existing code libraries, typically written by other white engineers.

Despite improvements in cognitive technologies, that dream managerial scenario is still far from reality. Decisions that executives face don't necessarily fit into defined problems well suited for automation.
