Welcome to Share the Skies, the nation's first statewide initiative that enables students and teachers to study astronomy in real time during the daytime without leaving the classroom. This innovative project was developed by the Virginia Department of Education, New Mexico Skies, Software Bisque, and Virginia Tech's Institute for Connecting Science Research to the Classroom. It enables Virginia students to access and control research-grade telescopes to explore Australia's night skies via the Internet. Students use CCD (charge-coupled device) imaging techniques to capture digital images of deep space for further study.
"Virginia public schools provide age-appropriate instruction in Internet safety and all of the commonwealth's school divisions are required to develop acceptable Internet use policies. The Virginia Department of Education assists by developing guidelines for instructional programs related to Internet safety and by providing technical assistance to school divisions in the development of policies to protect children from cyber bullying, online abuse and other dangers."
The Virginia Department of Education has teamed up with the Professor Garfield Foundation and the Office of the Attorney General of Virginia to provide guidance for students, teachers, and parents to help students protect themselves online.
"The Virginia Algebra Resource Center (ARC) is a web-site designed for Algebra I teachers and students across the Commonwealth. ARC is intended to provide easy access to resources that address Virginia's SOL. Our emphasis is on locating and cataloging web-based information that can be used to enrich and reinforce the curriculum, while also helping to make algebra fun and relevant. Check out the Weekly Highlights each week to see what's new at ARC. If you have questions or comments please contact us, or use the Online Forum to initiate discussion with other algebra teachers across the state."
