"LibX is an open source browser extension for Firefox and Internet Explorer that provides access to your library's resources. Designed originally as a Firefox extension, version 1.0 of the LibX extension for Internet Explorer is available as of December 2008 (for those of you at Internet Explorer but not Firefox friendly institutions....or maybe that's just us!). "The Wayne State Library System launched its library mapping application in February 2010, designed to help locate materials in the five WSU libraries. The system works within the catalog to show the location of materials, as well as provides a web form for use at the reference desk. Developed using PHP and MySQL, it requires only minimal effort to update using a unique call number overlay mechanism. In addition to mapping shelved materials, the system provides information for any of the over three hundred collections held by the WSU Libraries. Patrons can do more than just locate a book on a shelf: they can learn where to locate reserve items, how to access closed collections, or get driving maps to extension center libraries. The article includes a discussion of the technology reviewed and chosen during development, an overview of the system architecture, and lessons learned during development."

"In acknowledging the Web as the platform for searching, sharing, aggregating and extending information, librarians need to familiarize themselves with the semantic web (an extension of the current web), learn new tools, techniques and trends. Most importantly for catalogers, they need to educate themselves in RDA (Resource Description and Access) which may soon replace AACR2 and MARC 21 as the new cataloging rules and standards. RDA is a set of guidelines evolved from AACR2 and is constructed on the framework of FRBR (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records) and FRAD (Functional Requirements of Authority Data). The application of which is meant to direct the library catalog in providing better access to Web resources. Instead of being a display standard of library catalog using AACR2, RDA is a content standard that attempts to improve the way catalogers describe and present elements, entities and their relationships and roles in the bibliographic world. It is also the intention of RDA to make data in library catalog play a better role in the Web environment. Moreover, RDA is supposedly more flexible and adaptable in that it may be used with many encoding schema such as MODS, MARC, Dublin Core, etc."

"A simple componentised framework constructed in Javascript to enable the sharing of Ajax Style extensions to a web interface. Although the drive for this is rooted in Library OPAC interfaces, the framework is applicable to any environment which, via identifiers contained within a html page, needs to link to or embed external resources. "

"In addition to Discovery products created by commercial companies, a number of alternatives have emerged in the open source arena. These open source products allow libraries to follow a more experimental approach in establishing their nextgeneration discovery interface strategy. Libraries can download and install the software on a test server, load sample data sets, and customize it without the need to make a major commitment or financial outlay. They can even experiment with multiple products. Theavailability of these open source products allows a library to make an initial investigation of a new generation interface and gain hands-on experience, even if they might eventually decide to purchase a commercial product. In the open source discovery interface arena, VUfind stands as the dominant product. The Mellon-funded eXtensible Catalog project has been underway for about 2 years and will soon be releasing software. Other open source discovery technologies emerging include the University of Virginia's Blacklight and OpenBib, which is an example of discovery interfaces developed internationally."
