The Summer Challenge Tuesday, July 21, 2009 When I was little, I loved school so much that I would ask my mom to give me homework out of the encyclopedias during the summer. Well in the same tradition, I decided to offer summer homework to the teachers in my division. Totally optional, but there would be a reward in the end--four hours of professional development credit awarded upon the submission of a portfolio containing all eight challenges. To my surprise, several teachers have accepted the challenge. I have even had teachers from other divisions ask for my homework after hearing what the Early Childhood teachers were doing. They are having so much fun! They have proudly shown me some of their projects. Some say they probably won't do the portfolio for credit, but just wanted to complete the challenges to learn something new. I am linking to the project documents here if you would like to take the challenge. Summer is a great time to learn something new!

How can marshmallows help build teams? | Connected Principals - 0 views

  •
I know that the summer months are a great time for reflection, but I also know that many of us are thinking ahead to the start of our school year.  I wanted to share an activity called, The Marshmallow Challenge, that has been popularized by Tom Wujek's Ted talk called, "Build a Tower, Build a Team."  After watching his presentation last summer, we performed this activity at a faculty meeting early in the year and I though it was a great way to have some fun and launch some great discussions.  We have worked very hard over the past few years to build a collaborative culture and I knew that this challenge would lead to a great discussion about the power of teaming.

It would be very helpful if you could provide us with a bit of information. This helps tremendously as we make plans. * The primary audience for this workshop will be K-12 teachers. Is that correct? * Are there any specific objectives or programs you hope to support through these trainings? * The confirmation indicates the workshop schedule is 8:30-3:30, Is that correct? Attached, you'll find the proposed agenda's for our week of workshops. Please review them to make sure they meet your objectives and let us know if we need to make any changes or if you need any clarification on what's included. Please reply to this email as soon as possible to let me know if the agenda's meet your approval. Don't hesitate to contact me if you have questions. I'm looking forward to meeting you all in June. With my summer travel schedule, email is the most efficient way to reach me. I do check several times a day.

Education Requirements to Become a Teacher? When I think of the best benefits of becoming a teacher I think of summer time vacation. One of the best benefits is that as a teacher you will get off not only during the summer but also during all government holidays.

- 50 Sites in 60 Minutes, Volume Three - 3 views

"50 Sites in 60 Minutes, Volume Three This is a collection of sites that I like to use in a one-hour session of professional development. I like to update it twice a year to keep things fresh and because the first two were such a huge success. The last volume received over 21,000 views on Slideshare alone. As with all my resources, feel free to use them any way you see fit and I hope you enjoy it. I've even seen this used as teaching tool for a blogging exercise at the college level. Stay tuned for volume four sometime this summer! "

Math Matters: Off-Road Algebra - 1 views

  •
Welcome to Math Matters, where we employ 21st century learning tools and methodologies to help make math relevant and fun again for both you and your students. This 30-segment video resource focuses on ninth grade Pre-Algebra and Algebra. What makes this unit different from most? It revolves around the world of off-road motorcycle racing. Team HotChalk worked with a group of young HotChalk-sponsored cyclists, videotaping them jumping off ramps along dirt bike tracks and racing up the golden summer hills of a ranch overlooking the ocean in Central California. Courtesy of math teachers Jason Dyer (Pueblo High School, Tuscon, AZ), who scripted out the 'real world' algebra problems, and John Villavicencio (Berkeley High School, Berkeley, CA), who explains the step-by-step solutions in each segment, we are bringing you our first homemade model of YouTube-style learning, "Off-Road Algebra." Our hope is that you'll try out this unit with your class, and let us know what you think. We'd like you to be active participants in helping to shape the digital resources we feel are at the heart of learning in the new century.
