Today, both girls are integral parts of Garrison Elementary's "1st Grade Blues Band." In addition to putting on a great show, this band demonstrates irrefutable evidence of the positive role that music plays in education. To find out more about the pedagogy behind music and Mr. Schwartz's use of music in his classroom, please visit the KidsLikeBlues.org website. And you don't want to miss watching these incredible kids get their Blues on with a rousing rendition of "Sweet Home Chicago" at their recent talent show. TRANSCRIPT: Shame on you. This could be the greatest night of our lives, but you're going to let it be the worst. And I guarantee a week won't go by in your life you won't regret walking out, letting them get the best of you. Well, I'm not going home. We've come too far! And I'm going to stay right here and fight for this lost cause. A day may come when the courage of men fails... but it is not THIS day. The line must be drawn HERE. This far, no further! I'm not saying it's going to be easy. You're going to work harder than you ever worked before. But that's fine, we'll just get tougher with it! If a person grits his teeth and shows real determination, failure is not an option. That's how winning is done! Believe me when I say we can break this army here, and win just one for the Gipper. But I say to you what every warrior has known since the beginning of time: you've got to get mad. I mean plum mad dog mean. If you would be free men, then you must fight to fulfill that promise! Let us cut out their living guts one inch at a time, and they will know what we can do! Let no man forget how menacing we are. We are lions! You're like a big bear, man! This is YOUR time! Seize the day, never surrender, victory or death... that's the Chicago Way! Who's with me? Clap! Clap! Don't let Tink die! Clap! Alright! Let's fly! And gentlemen in England now abed shall know my name is the Lord when I tell our enemies that they may take our lives, but they'll never take our Independence Day!

High Techpectations: Friday 5: Cool Sites - 1 views

For the past month, I've been babbling about interesting web sites for kids and teachers at Vocalo.org (http://vocalo.org/), Chicago's first user-generated content radio station. It's an initiative of our local NPR affiliate and it broadcasts on the internet and at 89.5 if you're in the Chicago/Northern Indiana area. The station is a really interesting concept and I think a sign of the ways things will go with radio. Anyway, I thought I'd share 5 of my favorites from this series with you today. Enjoy!

Kevin Honeycutt, I Need My teachers to learn: check this out. The last ten days were a blur. I started in the Chicago suburbs and did a staff development day at a good friends school. I swung by the ICE conference and hung out with friends. Later I stayed with a friend and his family and colored pictures and made music with his kiddos. Next I did online safety presentations for kids and parents int he same location and it was off to Raleigh NC. Starbuck, my dog was with me for the first leg of the journey. Once in Raleigh, I spent three days at the NCTIES conference. I presented and met wonderful teachers but soon it was off to Monroe Louisiana. I spent the day with lots of educators and ate gumbo for lumch. It was goooood gumbo! Finally I traveled home and it was great to see my family again!
