Books Are Becoming Fringe Media - GigaOM - 1 views

  • Whether published in ink or pixels, books are facing tough competition from updates, posts, and a blizzard of free, brief and ephemeral writings that distract eyeballs from the task of digesting 300 pages of text.
  • Book publishers may be hoping the iPad and other tablets will solve this problem, but I think such devices are only going to make things worse.
  • It’s a refuge from the distractions of the web, a quiet garden walled off from the web except to download a book.
  • ...1 more annotation...
  • since the advent of the web reading has increased drastically and publishers are publishing more titles than ever. Merely looking at last year’s stats is poor reporting- last year the economy was in a deep recession and people weren’t buying. However, library use was up sharply. I don’t believe there is a future for printed volumes. It makes no sense economically. However, I do believe there is a book-like format that will survive because all the media you describe do not deliver long format information, including stories, well. Books are an immersion experience, not a skimming experience.

"But notably, according to an informal survey of Kindle devotees, 59 percent of people who buy the e-readers are over 55. Meanwhile, as a NEA study pointed out two years ago, people under 25 were already doing most of their reading on the web, with only 7 minutes a day devoted to books."

Designing Online Learning with Flash - Books24x7 - 0 views

  •
"It is sufficient at this point to state that the chosen classification for learning objective leads to a set of instructional strategies that have been shown to be successful in teaching that subject matter. This is a critical point because learning is dependent on instructional strategies more than any other variable; much more so than the media or the technology chosen to deliver instruction (Hannifin & Hooper, 1993)."

Webinar Recap: Brian Solis Presents Social Media and Education | Tech Academy - 0 views

  • Educators and students must both learn to participate in the social media realm, but participate in a way that is smart, educational and valuable. Since we are educating them on effective communication, we must be prepared to use social media tools inside of the classroom to get this point across. From personal conversations with other educators using social media, and chats with #SMCEDU, its clear that social media integration is not widely accepted or practiced across the USA. Its something Social Media Club- EDU aims to help facilitate through guidelines, training workshops, best practices and policy.

Wearing your Stickybit on your sleeve, or elsewhere | The Social - CNET News - 0 views

  • Here's how Stickybits work: put one of the stickers somewhere and take a photograph of the bar code with the Stickybits app, now available for iPhone and Android. You'll be able to "tag" it with photos and comments, as will anyone else who uses the Stickybits app to photograph the same bar code. There's a location tagged, too, thanks to a partnership with location software company SimpleGeo (whose co-founder Joe Stump called Stickybits "one of the more interesting and wonderfully weird products I've played with in quite awhile").

Adobe smacks back Apple over iPad, again - 1 views

  • So, developers are going to be forced to build two versions of their web pages if they care about reaching me as a customer and one of those versions will need to have no Flash or Silverlight (Apple is also resisting including Microsoft’s Silverlight platform).
  • Frankly, the first thing I do on a fresh install of any OS is to get a browser (Chrome or Firefox) and install a Flash blocking plug-in/add-on. Flash-based adverts are PIA. If I have options instead of Flash, I go for it. Heck, I don't even have Silverlight or Adobe AIR installed. I prefer my devices to be Flash-free! Apple is doing a great thing and hoping that Google will continue dumping Flash in favor of HTML5 (but they just bought a Flash-based web service, Picnik). And oh, Flash-based sites are problematic to the visually-impaired - no screen readers.
