-In 1938 she joined Artie Shaw's orchestra the next year and became the first african american women in an all white band

-She had a rough upbringing involving rape and prostitution
-She was famous for her song called"Strange Fruit" one of the first songs dealed with american racism.
-died a very young death at age 44
