    -huge american singer songwriter
    -nicknamed "Lady Day"
    -musical partner partner and Mentor Lester Young- very famous american jazz musician- tenor sax player,
    -She was a huge influence on vocal jazz, and even vocal pop
    -Had little technical training
    -very distinct vocal style -known for the way she played with tempo and phrasing
    -Joined Count Basie's band in 1937
    -In 1938 she joined Artie Shaw's orchestra the next year and became the first african american women in an all white band

    -She had a rough upbringing involving rape and prostitution
    -She was famous for her song called"Strange Fruit" one of the first songs dealed with american racism.
    -died a very young death at age 44
