"My job is to oversee the global impact of everything that occurs within our school and I have to ensure I am representing everyone and there was some questionable content." As of 6 p.m. Tuesday the students' anti-censorship petition posted at change.org had garnered 700 signatures. It specifically petitions Superintendent Dr. James Sebert and each signature is forwarded directly to the superintendent's email account."

Data, diffusion, impact: Five big questions the Wikileaks story raises about ... - 0 views

  •
The Wikileaks-Afghanistan story is big. It's big for the country, it's big for NATO soldiers and Afghan civilians, and (probably least importantly) it's big for journalism. And a ton of really smart commentary has been written about it already. So all I want to do here is chime in on what I'd be focusing on if I wanted to understand the Wikileaks story in a way that will still be relevant one year, five years, even twenty years from now.

New Facebook Feature: A Subscription to Friends' Feeds - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  • To help manage this problem, Facebook on Wednesday introduced a “subscription button,” which allows people to subscribe to parts of your news feed without having to become your Facebook friend. The new feature feels very similar to the follow button on Twitter, where you choose to follow someone’s feed.
    • Michelle Papp

I find this article newsworthy because so many people use Facebook to communicate, and updates and improvements to the site make this possible. The newsworthy qualities that this story contains are proximity, timeliness, and importance/impact. Proximity is because Facebook is an international institution that is available to all, therefore the story takes place just within people's computer screens. The story is timely because the news was received from Facebook officials just yesterday, and published today, and the story has great impact because of the incredible numbers of Facebook users.

    • Sara W

I found this interesting because I'm interested in fashion, and outdoor markets. Importance or Impact: it Impacted the people who go to the outdoor markets in and near Chicago because this one was unlike the rest offering things like tea tasting and unique clothing vendors. Timeliness: takes place monthly between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Proximity: Chicago. Meaning: it brings a new meaning to the outdoor market, that will bring a new mix of vendors that you wouldnt normally find.
  •
EVERY summer in Chicago, most neighborhoods put on their own street fair, with generally the same mix of homogeneous items: cheap sunglasses, tacky art, deep-fried food and music by local bands. But recently, a new concept - let's call it the curated flea market - has caught on, thanks to the introduction this year of Dose Market by a group of young and intrepid media and style experts.

summarizes the article... the information following goes into the specifics. In airport security, children under the age of 12 will go through less procedures.
  • Responding to the uproar over physical searches of children, the Transportation Security Administration is rolling out new procedures that should reduce, although not eliminate, the number of times children are patted down at airport checkpoints.

North Carolina Voters to Decide on Same-Sex Marriage - NYTimes.com - 0 views

    • Michelle Papp

I found this article interesting because I believe in equality, and hope that the vote proves successful. The three qualities of newsworthiness that this article contains are importance/impact, timeliness, and conflict. The story is of importance, and has the potential to greatly impact many people, because the vote it's discussing may result in the allowance of same-sex couples to marry, and the extension of health and social benefits to these pairs. Should the vote be successful, hundreds of couples will be allotted rights equal to those of heterosexual couples. The article is timely, because the Senate decided just yesterday that this vote would be included in the May primaries. Finally, the article involves conflict between conservatives who are against the vote as a whole, and fear for its outcome, and supporters of gay rights, who are hoping for a positive outcome, and continuously battling for equality.
  •
North Carolina on Tuesday took a big step toward losing its status as the last state in the Southeast without a constitutional amendment making it clear that marriage is legal only when there is a bride and bridegroom.

What if the Secret to Success Is Failure? - NYTimes.com - 0 views

    • Tom McHale

Why I found it newsworthy: This story is about how kids learn to be successful. As an educator this is something I care about a great deal. Qualities of News: Important/Impact - Many people have kids in school, so this would Impact a great deal of readers. Meaning - This tries to explain what is truly effective in schools. This is a complicated topic that is frequently debated. Conflict - there is some conflict between what parents at this school think and what Randolph is doing. Proximity - this is a school in Manhattan that would be close to most readers of the NY Times.
  •
The most critical missing piece, Randolph explained as we sat in his office last fall, is character - those essential traits of mind and habit that were drilled into him at boarding school in England and that also have deep roots in American history.

  • The infamous school year stress has already begun by the first day of school. On day one of our 180 day school year, book projects are due, and tests are waiting to be taken. Let the all-nighters and the pressure to not fail begin. Is this any comparison to the serenity of being on a beach? . . . Nowhere close.
    • Michelle Papp

I find this article newsworthy because it applies to me, and I feel and think many of the things that the article describes as a student. The article contains importance/impact, timeliness, and proximity. The article is important because it applies to the majority of high school students, which is a large chunk of our population. The topic it explains, excessive stress due to large loads of schoolwork, is something experienced by all of our as adolescents, and which can greatly impact our futures. The story is timely because for students, summer has just ended and given way to a new school year. While the school discussed is in the Fayette County School system, it applies to all high schools, across the nation, including my own.

Cheerleaders have to deal with many stereotypes that simply are not true. Many believe that cheerleaders practice very little; others think they only perform at football games. However, one stereotype stands head and shoulders above the rest as the most glaring falsehood.
