Conversation Coach Lite for iPad on the iTunes App Store - 0 views

  • The Conversation Coach is designed to help players learn the back and forth flow of normal conversation. Typically, most low and high-tech communication tools only enable one-way conversations. For example, a student might point to a picture of an apple, and then he receives an apple. There is no normal back and forth exchange. Using the Conversation Coach, you can keep the volley going. When playing the Conversation Coach, two players sit facing each other with the iPad between them. The first player chooses something to say, then passes the ball to the other side. Choices for player 2 will appear oriented such that player 2 can read them. For students who are not ready for back and forth conversations, or for individuals who need to use the Conversation Coach to make statements, there is a one way mode available. Two way conversations can also be practiced in a "play against the computer" mode.
  • $1.99
  • My son who has autism loves this program. We use the full version to write custom conversations about his daily activities. He actually enjoys helping us to write the conversations, take photos and record his voice. After practicing with the Conversation Coach, he is able to remember the conversations and use them without the iPad. The Lite version has a few samples to give you an idea of the back and forth flow, but you really need the full version so that you can customize conversations for each individual.

With each tap the screen transitions to a calmer face and color. In this way, the app prompts the user to count backwards from ten followed by a deep breath. The app also includes a simple social story with line drawings about anger. The social story talks about feeling angry and things you can do, like counting to ten, breathing deeply and taking a break, to calm yourself down. • When I read the rationale behind this app, I simply had to buy it-even at its over inflated price. I was soon very disappointed. The core word buttons are very small, this limits its usefulness for individuals with motor and visual impairments. The core word page is very hard to find specific words- there is no categorization according to word types for example verbs, prepositions etc. There is no colour coding scheme such as Goossens, Crain and Elder to help navigate the core words, and neither are they in any alphabetical order. Automaticity does not mean just presenting core words in any old specific location, you must assist it by incorporation of alphabetising, colour coding etc. Options such as the ability to have word only buttons should be available, as well as the choice of different backgrounds for the buttons and message window. Some form of advanced word prediction should be available at this price, as well as the ability to interact with the app in such a way to allow for a minimum hold duration of the buttons, and a repeat delay. My criticism of the app does not stop there, who says that "a" is always followed by a list of animals and the"but" core word leads to body parts, as this app gives you to believe, what has happened to people , place or things. I suggest the therapist go back to the drawing board, and give us more bang for the buck.
