Scott Chanthongthip on January 25, 2010 Overview: Although the website has seven books students can read from, it offers a helpful tool in learning to read while listening to the computerized voice. The computerized voice can be distracting to young readers though that cannot put aside the monotonous tone and lack of colorful personality a real teacher can provide. Manipulation of the tool bar for the story can help students highlight text, translates highlighted words from English to Spanish, and allows students to stop the reading to answer critical comprehension questions. The design of the website looks simple at first but I think if this a website to help students read it should be in simpler terms. Use of the computerized reading voice can read the whole page to students, so this can be helpful to navigate the pages. Content: Most of the content is laid out simply but it takes a while to get used to navigation of the different tools. Students that would use this site would probably have some background in reading already, as stated ages 10 and up by the UDL. It takes previous knowledge of reading ability to understand some of the more complex stories the site offers. Using the "Stop to Think" option asks listeners to pick multiple-choice answers that show the student comprehends the story they just heard. If readers miss the questions, clues to the right answer help the reader find the correct answer. As a teacher, I would use this site sparingly because I believe the computerized voice reading to students can bore them quickly. The website also takes away the ability for students to learn from their peers. The books used in this selection from the UDL provide just small glimpse at the plethora of reading material out there. Zachary Donnan 2/5/12 Overview: This website is a free information website for teachers specifically geography teachers. This website has several different types of media and an extensive amount of tips to assist geography teachers with their lesson plans. This website is essentially a blog and resource site for geography teachers. Content: This website contains a huge amount of resources for geography teachers from games to slide shows to general tips for presenting information to students. This website also guides teachers on using technology and technological resources such as google effectively to assist them with teaching. There is also a wide range of free materials to access such as free ebooks, all in all a pretty neat website. Design: The design of this site is pretty simple to navigate, and it has a professional feel to it. This website seems to be extremely helpful to teachers and also has suggestions to guide you to other helpful materials. There is definitely a focus on the use of technology within the classroom on this site, and although there isn't really any contact info I still found it to be a good useful site.

Overview
The second website that I evaluated was bartleby.com. This website is a resource to hundreds of different texts that are all available for free online. You can read these texts online, purchase them, or download them as ebooks from amazon.com. This is a great resource for all ages. Overall I thought the website was a decent website. It's not very catchy and doesn't offer much information about the site, but it is a good resource to have.
Content
This website isn't an eye catcher. I think it would be hard to get students interested in the site because it looks very dry. It offers lots of content for free which is great, but it doesn't do it in a catchy way. The site is easy to navigate and has great resources. It seems like there is something for everyone on this site as long as you stay long enough to look for it.
Design
The site is set up very basically. It's easy to find your way around and search for something that you're interested in. It doesn't offer information about the website though. There is information on how you can advertise on their site but now about where the site gets its content and how they put it up for free. The site really looks like a reference library, which is appropriate for a website of this type.

Brianna Gillespie 9/14/11 OVERVIEW: This website is very kid friendly; it is colorful and easy to navigate. It has a wide variety of activities for children of all ages. It is a good website for teachers to use in their classrooms because of the many different lessons that can be learned. CONTENT: This website has activities focused on Kindergarten through second grade and third through sixth grade. Some of the main headings include games and activities, videos, eBooks, printables, and teacher resources. This website has quizzes too. Also, there is a library that children can look through to find books on many different topics. These would all very useful for teaching lessons. DESIGN: The design is very colorful and decorated like it is underwater; it is very appealing. I did come across a few links that did not work; however, I do not know if they are temporarily down or need to be fixed. All of the topics to choose from spell school with a q (sqool); I do not like this because it may confuse children about the correct way to spell school.

Overview: This a site that provides a variety of free kids books online. It is intended for all early grade school students. The site has books from a variety of genres to download in pdf form. The design and content are both exception and this site would be great in the classroom. Content: Users can tell that the site is for reading kid's books and it is appropriate for a grade school audience. No authors are identified on the site, but it site blog identifies contributors and authors. There is no link for contact on the site, but the blog has communication capabilities. Last updated information is available at the blog of the site. All links are functional. In addition, it is easy to navigate. Content is complete, organized, easy to understand, and free of bias. The site is interactive in that kids pick what to read and do so. I explored several free book sites and this one is the cleanest with the most variety. The site does have links to other books, and how to purchase them, which serve its purpose well. Design: The homepage is visually attractive and downloads quickly. Navigation is simple and content is well defined. The site sponsor information is not available except at the blog, which provides a great deal of information. The site is easy to navigate, but does not include an index. All links are active. Some multimedia is used to make the site appealing. The website is available on a variety of browsers, including Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Safari. The content of the site is extensive and fun for readers. The content is organized, easy to use, and design is consistent throughout the site. No books are outdated and new books are added regularly.

Overview: This is a free site that allows users to create and publish their own stories after creating an account. It is intended for all writers, but has specific features for educators and students. Users do not need an email account and there is no minimum age requirement. The site has templates, artwork, and programming for book creation as well as teacher administrative capabilities. This site has excellent design and content and is perfect for the classroom. Content: Users can quickly tell that the site is for publishing stories and that it is appropriate for all audiences. No authors are identified, but it is clear that storybird is a corporation with many contributors and the content they generate indicates that they are qualified. There is a "contact us" link in the help section and there is an "about" section as well. Last updated information is available on all stories, but not on general site content. All links function. In addition, it is easy to navigate and there is a how to video. Content is complete, organized, easy to understand, and free of bias. The site is almost entirely interactive as it is based on creation. I explored several eBook tools and this one is the best one for teachers. The site does not have any external links, but all content serves its purpose. Design: The homepage is visually attractive and downloads quickly. Navigation is simple and content is clear. There are many resources to help first time users navigate and use the software. The site sponsor information is available at the blog and at the help section. There is a link to email for assistance. The site is easy to navigate, includes an index at the bottom of the page, and all links are active. Excellent multimedia is used to make the site look good. Danielle Walter 9/5/11 Storyplace: The Chldren's Digital Library Overview: The Storyplace.org website is a great educational website for both English speaking students and Spanish speaking students. Or it also can be used for helping a child learn English or Spanish. The website has activities for pre-school age children and also for elementary age children. It offers an online reading, an activity, a take home activity and also a reading list so children can explore other books. The website is a great resource for teachers and parents to help children be excited about reading. Content: The Storyplace.org website is easy to navigate for children and adults. It is also set up nicely. It has the grade levels on the left side and when you click on one it comes up with a menu of the reading and activities. This is a great website for helping children learn how to read and to become excited about reading, but it is also great for teaching children how to navigate the web and to show them how useful it can be in learning. Design: The Storyplace.org website has very bold colors that are eye catching. It's also easy to navigate. It is a .org website so I would trust it to be a good website for my children or students to be on. It also contains the copyright on the page so it is even more trusted.

Michelle Jacobsen 9/16/11 Overview: This website is useful to both teachers and students. It focuses on grade levels K-6 and helps improve students reading skills. Teachers can get onto this site and create an account and put on the different book that their students are reading. After they do that the students can then log in and find their teachers name and practice their reading skills. Content: This website is used to help students improve their reading skills by reading for practice, recording their reading, checking with comprehension quizzes and listening for modeled fluency. For teachers there is a "teacher's corner" that helps them learn how to run through the website and even gives printable directions for students and their parents. Design: The overall design of this website is eye catching but not so over the top that it's hard to manage. It is extremely easy to navigate around and has a video on the homepage explaining the reasoning for the website and how to use it.
