Cyberbullying | StopBullying.gov - 0 views

Kate McDonnell October 13, 2014 The purpose of this website is to inform people about cyberbullying. Not only does it inform its reader about what it is, but what people can do about it as well as how to prevent it. This website makes many resources available, as well as valuable knowledge that can be put to use almost immediately for anyone who reads this. The intended audience is the general public, not just someone who is researching this topic. This website relates all of its information to society, so it is relevant for anyone who has taken notice to cyber bullying. Overall, this website seems reliable, though it isn't perfect. It is the better of the two resources I reviewed. The issues are minor, and the overall combination of design as well as content is strong. Content: When first viewing this website, the user can determine the basic content of the site, as well as its intended audience. The specific author wasn't clearly identified, therefore the information about whomever wrote the information on this site isn't available or known by the users of this website. The sponsor was clearly identified, though, as this is a government site so it clearly states that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services sponsors this website. There is a link to the website for that specific department, where one can find more about the sponsor as well as how to contact them. The latest revision date wasn't listed, so it is unknown if the content is updated. The content is complete, well organized, and easy to understand. It is free of bias, as well as interactive. There are videos, pictures, blogs, and many other components that contribute to this website. Design: The download was affective as well as speedy. The homepage has strong eye appeal; it isn't too busy but there are pictures and colors that make it appealing. No directions are required to navigate this website, it is easy and clear for the user how to make their way around this websi

Overview Report: This website is the official website for the Cross-Fit community here in Laramie, Wyoming. This website talks about where the gym is located, what specific workouts are each day, the trainers, food and nutrition facts, and tips for improving their strength and stability during their Cross Fit experience. Content Summary: I was quickly able to determine that this website was dedicated to the fitness needs of the people in Laramie. Cross Fit is a type of fitness, and I could easily tell that it was dedicated both to the community of Laramie, and to the students of the University of Wyoming. After looking around, I could identify that there was more than one author of this particular website. There was a specific tab that informed people on the trainers, and their experience with Cross Fit. Each coach had a profile that was updated and recent. The sponsors of the site were listed on the right of the website, and they were clearly identified. There were posted links to other websites for further education, and they all worked properly. The purpose of this site is for a business. The content of this website achieves this purpose, and it seems to be complete and well organized. The content of this site is easy to understand and is explained very thoroughly. This website provides clear and knowledgeable content with further resources to help solidify their facts. Design Summary: The homepage did download efficiently and was very attractive to the eye. There were many links, pictures and descriptions available. There were tabs of different information to click on in order to narrow down your search. The sponsor was clearly identified and specific information for contacting the sponsor was provided. This website was easy to navigate, and there were directions for specific parts of the site that would need further instruction.

Cyberbullying: Facts and legal issues, risk factors and resources to help - 0 views

Kate McDonnell October 13, 2014 From the get go a reader can tell that the purpose is to inform. It's obvious what the reader will be informed about; cyberbullying. Many different components of this topic are available to the reader, ranging from laws of cyberbullying, risks, and actual cases of cyberbullying. The intended audience of this website seems to be anyone doing research on this topic; particularly students. It isn't very advanced in wording and layout as a whole, so it might be good for junior high all the way through college students. Overall, it has very strong parts and very weak parts, though I don't think I'd recommend it because there isn't a way to verify important details. Content: When it comes to information providers, this website is weak. The authors and sponsors aren't listed anywhere, therefore the credentials of whoever created this website aren't accessible. The latest revision isn't stated anywhere on the website, so the reader has no way of knowing if the latest revision date is appropriate for this information. The only thing that might lead a reader to believe the information is current is that specific recent cases of cyberbullying are listed, so the information has to be somewhat recent. The purpose of this website is clear, and the content achieves the purpose of it; informing. The content is complete as well as well-organized and easy to understand, making it clear and convenient for the reader. It appears to be free as bias as well. This website also provides links to other reliable websites, which is another strong point. Design: The website downloads affectively and quickly. The homepage doesn't necessarily have strong eye appeal, it is bland and boring. That could be a good thing though, because it isn't overwhelming. A reader always can tell where they are in the website, because an index at the top of the website is provided and clearly labeled. All of the links worked and there aren

For Latino Parents, Bilingual Classrooms Aren't Just About Language : Code Switch : NPR - 0 views

Brianna O'Shea October 13, 2014 Overview: The purpose of this article is to tell the two sides of bilingual classes and what both side, whether to keep in schools or get rid of, think about bilingual classes in relation to their children. Some believe that teaching a second language simply hinders teaching and lowers test scores while the other side believes that students should have the right to learn two languages, including their home language. The audience is meant for those debating whether to keep bilingual classes in their children's' schools or not, especially Latino parents. Overall, this article is a good read and presents good reasons on both sides of the argument. Content: The title states both the purpose of the article and the intended audience, yet while the author is provided, information about the author is not available. The sponsor is identified, yet there is not obvious way to contact them. The article is up to date and the content is complete while also achieving its purpose. It is organized and doesn't seem to be biased as it presents both sides. Design: The title is clear and it is visually attractive with small, easy to read paragraphs. The sponsor is clearly identified and the copyright date is easy to find. It is easy to search the site and provides good information to make the site worth visiting. The format is consistent throughout the site and is easy to follow. The date is clearly visible yet no link is provided to contact the author.

FunBrain.com - The Internet's #1 Education Site for K-8 Kids and Teachers - 3 views

  •
Content: This website contains lots and lots of stuff. It is set up like a classroom and has a reading link, a math link, a playground link, and an arcade link. I think this is more of a game site than an educational one. There are also lots of links to other help sites, but the majority of the links are for advertiser's webpage's, distracting visitors. Design: After looking at it for awhile, I started to feel lost and uninterested because of all the advertisements and the lack of visuals. There are thousands of links for kids to go to, and the actual site doesn't really support a good learning environment. As said above, it's mostly games with reading sections that really looks fun, but if you have to look through the games to get to that section, students will probably never get there on their own. The visual part of this website is interesting. The homepage is pretty boring and filled with links, but the reading and games tabs are designed for younger students. Attribution: The purpose of this site is probably intended to promote learning is fun, but becomes easily more of a distraction with all of the advertisements. I don't think I would promote this site in my classroom without adult supervision because students could so easily be distracted by toys and games.

Abbey Robbins-Lilley 5 Sept. 2010 Fun Brain Website Evaluation (Good One) Overview The name of the site is Fun Brain. It looks like a fun place for elementary school kids to play games that are educational. There are a ton of different kinds of links to go to, but they seem to be well-organized, making it a website that kids won't quickly get bored with it. There are lots of resources for teachers and help for parents as well. Content There are several buttons to that take you to lots of different kinds of games. There are also links that take you to places in the site specifically designed for each elementary school grade. There are also categorized games organized by subject, such as reading. There are also excellent resources and references available. It is all excellently displayed and categorized. The games are educational and challenging. It is an excellent site for kids to exercise their brains to further excel in school, all while having fun. Design The design of the website is great. Although there are lots of different buttons and links, they are organized well to prevent being overwhelming. The actual graphics of the site are great as well. I think they really catch the eye of elementary-age kids. Also, the site looks very new, professional, and up-to-date, which makes it even more appealing.

Overview This is an excellent site to send home with student for extra learning outside of schools. Which both pages for students and parents it allows parents to interact as well with their children. It is a very good resource. It can be difficult to find certain games at times, but it is still a recommendation worthy site. Content The content is neatly organized with pages for children, parents and teachers. It has a rather unique feature which allows teachers to search the site for appropriate games based on what they are doing in class. The games are divided with obvious titles. Along with Academic games they have games for children to play for fun making this an ideal site to recommend to parents. The games are simple enjoyable and display the content readily. Overall the content of this site is excellent Design This site is obviously made for children. The typing is large and pictures accompanying most of the games. Icons are used largely throughout the site. They keep with the theme of the site and have fun and simple repetitive backgrounds that are interesting, but are not distracting. The overall color of the site is blue which is rather relaxing. The organization of the site could be better but overall it is decent.

Emily Hastings Reviewed: 2/5/12 Funbrain.com Purpose: The purpose of this website is advances students K-8 on their skills in math, reading and literacy using education games, books, and comics. Intended Audience: This site is intended for students in kindergarten to eighth grade, and can also be used as a teaching tool and reference for teachers and parents. Available Resources: It lacks links to others sites, but does have quite a few resources on the site itself. Overall Review: This site is well put together and contains many educational resources. There are games, books, and comics that could all be used to assist in teaching and learning. The website is easy to use and to navigate around in, and is overall very organized. There is a basic format used throughout the whole site. There are no under construction signs and seems to be working fine. The user is easily able to understand what audience the site is appropriate for, and the purpose. Overview: This would be a great site for children, not only is it educational, but its fun. Content: The content of this website is easy to understand, and is educational for students more toward the elementary school age. It is a good resource for teachers though as well. It consists of games, books, and comics. Design: The design of this website catches the users' eye, and is definitely welcoming. Overview The purpose of this website is to help kids interact with math and reading. The intended audience is K-8. My overall impression of the website is that is very beneficial and a good free website for students to practice math and reading, whereas with other websites you have to pay to use the website. Content The only thing that I would critique on this website is having other links that would be appropriate and have to do with reading and math. But other than that, I would highly recommend this website. Design I think that everything is up to date but there is no for sure way to tell on the website, there is the copy right that does say 2013 but there is no one hundred percent way to tell if it has all been updated. So this is one thing that I would change on the design for the website.

Trevor Montgomery For this resource, we see another website that in a way, tricks students into thinking they are just playing games by giving them subject related activities. With the subjects of math and reading, students having interactive games, books and comics and even more fun links, without thinking they are doing much work. Through the "Funbrain" arcade, students can also complete activities and must pass obstacles to get through an interactive game board. If they do not successfully complete an activity, they will not be able to get past their current location, but will feel challenged to get through each activity and will most likely attempt multiple times until mastery of the activity. The great thing about this website is that students can also use codes to pick up where they left off on the game board so that they do not have to start over each time they log on (with their parents' permission of course). From grades 1st through 8th, there is a great variability from subjects, and students who are feeling extra brave might even try a level of difficulty higher than their current grade level. As someone who used this website in school when he was in elementary school, I can say that this resource is extremely effective and I think that students will come back to it time and time again. Navigating the website is easy enough. If you type in www.funbrain.com in the url box, you will be directed to the site. From here, you can choose to use the math arcade, reading, fun arcade, playground, and all games tabs, as well as books & comics and more fun activities. This website is specifically directed towards the audience of students in grades 1st through 8th, so as a teacher you can trust it to be safe and student-friendly.

Ask Jeeves.com is a website that can give you definitions, images and answer all your questions. This site helps students of all kinds with projects, essays, news, and references. The sites images though have some raciest pictures that make fun of President Obama. These pictures should not be allowed on these sites yet they are. Ask Jeeves is note a good site for pictures showing true photos of a person's real character. The intended audience for this site is anyone needing to find something or asking a question about a certain topic. A lot of college and high school students use this site for problems they may face with a project, paper or definition. The resources for this site contain photos, web findings, news, and videos. The resources are mostly correct, but like Google they have photos that are not accurate. This site is very good overall and the only thing it lacks is its credibility of some of its images. I have used this site for definitions, resources and web findings. My impression of this site is good; I just would just like to see that they ban pictures that show raciest pictures or pictures with no reliability. I would use this site for about anything to help me to complete a paper or project.

For Kids - NASA Science - 0 views

http://science.nasa.gov/kids/ Reviewed by: Rhianna Kipper Overview: The intended purpose of this sight is very clear. It's name is the first clue that the content is meant for kids wanting to learn about the solar system. It lays out the solar system in a way that kids can understand and also offers games and other things to engage them. There is a table of contents that clearly defines all of the pages available which include almost every part of the Universe. This sight is informative and fun at the same time and would be great for older age elementary students to use. Content: The content of this webpage is both informative and fun. Its audience is clearly stated in the name and its purpose is also laid out clearly in the opening paragraph as well as the contents bar to the side. This bar makes it easy to quickly determine what is available on the website. The author is clearly identified and is credible because they are listed as a NASA official. The sponsor is obviously NASA and that is identified. The latest revision date is provided and is recent. I believe that the content is recent and all the links are working properly. All of the content is complete and the purpose is clearly stated. It is all very well organized and free of biased. I would consider this site one worth going back to. Design: The website downloads efficiently and there is immediately appeal to how organized it ia. You can tell where you are and that all the content is related to what you're looking for. The site sponsor is clearly identified. You can move around to each section without clicking too many times or going to unnecessary web pages. There is plenty of information and the same basic format is used throughout the website. The date it was last revised is available and seems to be recent.

Reach Every Child - Welcome! - 0 views

Peggy Hall\nAugust 31, 2010\nWebsite Evaluation\nOverview:\nI reviewed the website, Reach Every Child which is a website that helps teachers establish lesson plans. I believe the point of this website is to link the viewer to other websites that have information (i.e. lesson plans, facts, and data) about certain subjects. It is mostly a resource for teachers and students looking for information in whatever subject they need to discover more information in. I feel like this website could use some more content in explaining its overall use, but it does have a lot of great links for the viewer. This website needs to be enhanced, but the meaning behind it is good. I did also find some lack in labeling each section effectively. It took me a little while to completely understand how this website works and the author's credibility and contact information is lacking. \nContent:\nAs I previously mentioned it was not easy for me to decipher the overall objective of this site, I knew it dealt with lesson plans, but how those lessons plans were presented and used on the site was a little confusing at first. It is known on the webpage that Horace Mann developed it and that it is founded by educators for educators, but it does not have a bibliography page or link describing who Horace Mann Company is. It addresses in its disclaimer that if there are any questions to email them, but there is not an email address. This website does have over 5,000 resources and different links which I do find beneficial. However, it does also mention that you could hit a dead end and to not be discouraged. It is not apparent how current the information is that is being displayed on the webpage. This site does have some organization, but as I previously mentioned there is not exactly a clear homepage or labeled content links etc… There are a lot of links which do not clearly explain where they will be taking you next. \nDesign:\nThe design is lacking. It does not catch my eye appeal when I first l

Chaun Ary Teaching with Technology Professor Yeshi 1 September 2010 Website Review for "The Learning Network" Content 1. The website was great at first look because it is sponsored by the New York Times which is a reliable source. The site was clearly meant to give teachers more interacting teaching tools. The authors were provided but their contact information wasn't. The site didn't mention their credibility but it did give all their past publications which in a way is credibility. The information was all current and updated to the current date. The content of the site was complete and well organized with links to specific areas such as civics, global history, and American history. The information is good however the reader must understand that they do have links to NY Times editorial links which are always biased. The site also has interactive maps and teaching tools which is invaluable in teaching. Overall the site was definitely worth while.

Jaymie Sheehan ITEC 2360-04 9/2/2010 OVERVIEW For this review, I visited the National Council of Teachers of English site, http://www.ncte.org. The intended audience for this site is clearly for English, literacy and language art teachers, from the elementary to college levels. The intended purpose of the site is to provide these educators with information and resources that will help them improve in the classroom. The site has various resources including professional development, press relating to English and education, shopping, and the ability to interact with different educators. I felt that this site was great for a multitude of reasons. The layout is simple and extremely easy to navigate, there were seemingly unlimited resources and links for teachers of each grade level, educators are able to use this site to interact with one another and become more proficient in their classrooms. located at NCTE. By scrolling down the page, one can find the sponsor's address and phone numbers if quandaries arise. There is also a specific tab that allows the user to contact NCTE for any variety or reasons. The information on the site is kept current. All links seem to work and are relevant, however I found no date telling the user when the last revisions were made. The information quality of this site is superb. The purpose of the site is clear and everything seems to be complete. There is myriad information located within the site for teachers. Of course, since this is a site aimed toward English teachers all grammar and spelling seem to be correct!

Haylee Bolinger Website evaluation 1 9-2-10 Overview The website stickworks.net is a promotional tool for Patrick Dougherty. As an artist that is in demand worldwide he must keep a portfolio as accessible as possible. Fans and potential clients are welcome to look through Dougherty's work and his biography. On this website clients can make requests for his large scale installations, while fans are directed to admiring his work though books, videos, calendars, and even full length feature film. Content From the introductory page one has the option of continuing into the main site or purchasing a book about Dougherty. Once navigated into the main site you can view every location and date of Dougherty's work and you have the many options to choose from in the main menu. Stick Works contains a thorough biography and video resources that help the viewer better understand how and why Dougherty makes his artwork. This website is being updated on a monthly bases due to the demand for Dougherty's artwork. Design The web site Stick Works is visually appealing with a slate background and white font. This sleek background draws attention to the striking pictures of Dougherty's artwork. Navigating is made easy with a menu bar at the top of every page. On this menu one can find out all there is to know about Dougherty: news, biography, installations (past and present), Curriculum vitally, resources, shop, and contact info.

Xtreme Xylanase Discovery Aims to Revolutionize Biorefineries - 0 views

Content: The first look at the website does a great job of displaying the content of the article but it is more difficult to really pin down an audience. It seems like it is aimed at people who want a quick overview of the topic. The author of the article is not identified so it is hard to judge the qualifications of the author. The sponsor on the other hand is clearly identified. Idaho National Laboratory and Department of Energy sponsored the article. There are also two specific contact people identified. The user is given both a phone number and the ability to e-mail the two contact people. The site lacks any information about when it was last updated. This shows that the information may not be updated frequently and it is difficult to know if the user should use this information because there is potential that it is outdated. The only date I can find is actually on another page. Although there is no way to know how often the website is updated, the links all appear to be working appropriately. The information on this site seems to be of a pretty high quality. The purpose is very clear. It is an informational page and effectively achieves its purpose. The content is complete and well organized. The information is easy to understand for the most part. Some of the terms are a little confusing but otherwise it is very clear. I don't know very much about this topic, but from what I know this information seems accurate. The bias in this article is easy to identify because it is pro Xylanase. It really preaches the benefits of this substance. There are a lot of links to further information as well as links that take the user to other science related sites.

ABCya! Fifth Grade Kids Computer Games & Activities - 0 views

Overview: The website ABCya.com is a website for elementary school grades K-5. The purpose of this website is to help children understand math, and language arts in a fun way. The website offers many different types of games, puzzles and tools to further the education of elementary grades K-5. Content: The content of the website ABCya.com is somewhat clear. This website is fully completed and is used effectively with a well organized home screen that is easy to understand and helps the child or the teacher find the correct grade and then from there the child or the teacher can find the grade specific learning tools. The website ABCya.com would be a great reward tool for teachers to us due to the fact that the website is somewhat built for learning but it also is more geared to having fun. The website ABCya.com can be a fun website for grades K-5. Design: The website ABCya.com is a bright website with many different colors that might distract the attention of younger children. This website also has a tool that can be used to find the desired grade level that the teacher or parent can use with their children. The website does have a few ads on the sides of the page that can distract the young child to look at. Also to find the desired grade level the child or the teacher will have to look at the bottom of the page, which might not be good for younger children because they will not know where to look. This website would be great for more of a reward site than an actual learning site.

Sarah Skinner on January 22, 2010 Overview The purpose of this website is to start getting toddlers interested in books. There are many storybooks available to read to toddler aged children. There are also themed sections for special holidays where coloring page and educational games can be found. My overall impression of this site is that it would be great for toddlers to be able to start getting ready for school activities. Content It is easy to determine the basic content of this site. The site tells exactly who the webpage is for. The author is not clearly identified and I am not able to find a link to find information about the author. The sponsor is clearly identified in the top right hand corner. There is a contact link available to receive more information if needed. The latest revision date is not available and it is unclear if the content is updated frequently. However, this site really does not need information updated since it is reading material for toddlers. All links are working properly. The purpose of the site is clear that it is informational and entertainment. The website looks complete and professional and everything is organized very well. All material is easily understood and has a lot of useful information. The content is free of bias opinions. There are interactivities available for toddlers that make this site more valuable. All information appears to be accurate and correct grammar and spelling are used. There are sites available for teachers and parents as well on the page which would be helpful. Design The homepage downloaded efficiently and is very well put together. There are clear titles and descriptions to let you know where you are. There is an index with a variety of different links to click on. The sponsor is identified clearly and there is a contact link to get a hold of the sponsor. Megan Ridings ITEC 2360 Website Evaluations January 24, 2010 Overview: On the website, Teachers.Net, the main purpose is to help elementary school teachers with lesson plans for all different subjects and in addition to help in all areas of the classroom. It is clear that this website is designed for an audience of elementary school teachers, student teachers and parents who are homeschooling their children. Overall I feel that the site is well made, however not very clearly organized. The site is easy to semi-easy to navigate, and helpful in some aspects, but not necessarily with lesson plans like I was looking for. This site is a little bland, and is not one that really caught my interest. Content Summary: I have found the content of this site to be "poorly designed and difficult to use." The site is up to date and current, and it is easy to tell that the purpose of the site is to be informational. The content of this site is well organized, however it is not easy to navigate, and a little difficult to understand. The site appears to be complete, and offers a sufficient amount of information for elementary school teachers, however is not intended for those interested in elementary school lesson plans. The information provided appears to be accurate, if you are able to find what you are looking for. Design Summary: On this site the design lacks much of what I think a site needs to be efficient. This site downloads efficiently, however it lacks the "eye-appeal," that I would hope for within a site based on elementary schools. The homepage over all lacks appeal, however it is easy to see who the authors are and see that the authors are qualified and reliable. As for navigation, the design of this site is hard to understand, and contains too much on each page. This site is definitely not one that I would recommend for elementary lesson plans and is not clearly labeled, however it uses the same basic format consistently within the site, which i

It is clear that this website is designed for an audience of elementary school teachers, student teachers and parents who are homeschooling their children. Overall I feel that the site is well made and organized, the site is easy to navigate, and extremely helpful with online video tutorials and printable versions of lesson plans. In addition, this site is creative because aside from the creators of the site, new lesson plans are added daily by teachers in order to keep the site full of useful lesson plans. Content Summary: I have found the content of this site to be "worth bookmarking for future needs." The site is continuously being revised, as each day teachers are adding more lesson plans, in addition it is easy to tell what the purpose of the site is to be informational. The content of this site is well organized and easy to navigate and understand. The site appears to be complete, and offers a sufficient amount of information for those interested in elementary school lesson plans. The only flaws I find within the site are related to the information providers. Since the lesson plans are added by teachers and parents daily it is hard to track the authors, also it is impossible to determine whether or not the authors of pages are qualified and reliable resources. Design Summary: On this site the design is much weaker than that of the content. This site downloads efficiently, however it lacks the "eye-appeal," that I would hope for within a site based on elementary lessons. The homepage over all is strong and contains information for contacting the sponsors, as well as appropriate copyright date and other clear indicators of the contents of the site. As for navigation, the design of this site is efficient. Within the mult
