Digital Citizenship lessons for students and teachers

I love this link, Mekca! As I'm beginning to think about introducing social media into my classroom, the idea of teaching digital media keeps popping up. I know it needs to be taught, but I don't know where to begin! This would be a great place to start. I see that it is mainly for teacher usage, but it's a great place to start and get ideas. A lot could be implemented from the material presented. I plan to use this to plan my digital literacy lessons, thank you!
  •
Thanks, Mekca! We spend very little time teaching Digital Citzenship. I think it needs to be embedded in every teacher's curriculum. There are so many "teachable" moments that present themselves that could be linked to proper social media usage. This is going to be an excellent resource for me to share with my fellow educators.

This is an excellent source for me to use in my Teen Insights classroom. We started with a unit on bullying... then cyberbullying... I think we're missing the point- students just need to learn to be good digital citizens! I will use this source to build my curriculum. I appreciate that the curriculum is geared towards students but that it gives teachers and parents good background as well. Parents are a huge part of cyberbullying problems. Much of the conflict we have in school has to do with something students do online at home and then carry those hard feelings with them to school. I do not have resources similar to these. The video that my curriculum used to show warned students to avoid chat rooms and to only choose names that gave no indication of their age, gender, or location. It's good for students to stay safe, but the world has become much more familiar and personal with technology. Our curriculum needs to adapt to keep up.

Brain breaks kids love - GoNoodle - 0 views

  •
This site allows teachers to have an organized list of brain breaks for kids. The site is interactive and kids choose an avatar that builds as they do more activities.
  •
I am on the Blue Zone Committee for the building, and this looks like a valuable resource for me. Brain Breaks are very useful with 4th graders. Have you tried looking up "Just Dance" Videos on Youtube? I have a collection saved to my personal youtube channel called, "Brain Breaks." http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLUN_fyIUtwFrGc-c0f-E7Ai14fW0WTeIk

Pandora Internet Radio - Listen to Free Music You'll Love - 0 views

  •
Pandora is on my list of favorite Web 2.0 tools. There are times I need background music for student activities. Even with the free subscription, you can create a station, mark it so there are no songs with explicit language played, and I have found that if I use my ipad or phone, commercials are fewer in number!
  •
I've seen this used in my daughter's kindergarten classroom by the teacher, for background music. You're right, Becky, it does make for great ambiance while the students are working. What 'channels' do you prefer? For alternatives, you might try GrooveShark (which is great because you can select specific CD's -- my favorites are the movie soundtracks) and I'm just now trying out SoundCloud, which has an Android and iPhone app. Soundcloud has fewer selections than Grooveshark, but a better interface and easier sharing/liking.

ShowMe Interactive Whiteboard on the App Store on iTunes - 1 views

  •
Even though this app only works on iPads, I consider it a Web 2.0 tool as well because recorded "ShowMe's" are accessible on your computer. Similar to Educreations, it is an interactive whiteboard. I've used with with elementary students to create social stories. I use my iPad to take a picture of them doing the preferred activity, then have them voice record their own description. Very effective with children with autism!

An interactive way to assess students through ipads, iphones, androids and more!
  •
Britta, I think this is a great resource for teachers to use as a bell ringer or quick formative assessments during class. I could see this being a problem if the district is not 1:1 or if not ALL students have a smartphone to participate. I feel the students would think this was pretty cool. When I taught in a district that had clickers, the students loved seeing the results up on the board! I think they took ownership in it, which made them more engaged.

This looks like a great tool to use in my classroom. It would be a quick way to assess students on a topic before moving on. This tool is clearly geared towards teachers. It can help them to quickly grade quizzes that are easy but tedious to correct such as true/false and multiple choice. I would like to play around with this a bit more and see if there are discussion opportunities with it. My students use Poll Everywhere to have discussions or answer polls, but the results are posted for everyone to see. I like that the tools grades the quizzes and posts the results to a spreadsheet format. That would be such an efficient way to grade. This is much more user friendly than other automatically graded quizzes like Flubaroo. Thanks for sharing!

A few teachers in my building use secretive and have shared it in professional development sessions. It looks very easy to use and seems like something students would be very easily engaged with. Great resource for teachers to use with students. It would be just as easy for students to design questions and present as a quiz or dipstick check for understanding after a presentation or some other in class assignment. My school uses Promethean boards so we have this same capability built into that technology with the Active Votes or Active Expressions. I can also see this being something you could do with the poll feature on Edmodo. I think there are more and more resources out there in this style. I agree with Kayla that this is MUCH easier to use than Flubaroo, even though that is a very useful tool as well.

I have only started to explore the world of AR, but am excited for its use in education. I create a group of auras for a display board on digital citizenship this past autumn and am looking to use it here soon at a Leadership Workshop with other teachers. Right now, I can only think of use by teachers and that's because I haven't thought of ways to include students yet. looking for ideas though. Augmented reality apps and websites can easily be found: PopAR, colAR, Chromville, Elements4D, AR Flashcards, Layar, and Codigo Code just to name a few.
  •
Rob, I've intrigued by augmented reality since I first learned about it at an EdCamp last winter. Since then I've played around with AR flashcards, Chromville and Aurasma. I can see this application used both by teachers and students. It is my hope to generate some Aurasma's next year that students can demonstrate to the public. This will work to connect student learning to the public and showcase our 1:1 ipad initiative! @travislappe is someone you should follow on Twitter - he's a tech integrationist in South Dakota that has been very active with augmented reality.

I have been intrigued by augmented reality since beginning the VREP program at my school. This resource looks like a user friendly way to introduce the concept of AR into the classroom. I have actually used Poly Fauna for a collaborative project with West Central's chorus. It was a great way to tell a story and adapt a virtual storyboard to music. It definitely expanded the lesson plans I had previously implemented with our peer groups.

Cramberry: Create & study flash cards online - 1 views

  •
Create online flashcards for a class. You can share these with friends or colleagues.
  •
I agree that these can be used in the classroom successfully. I have used something similar and have found success. Now, I am not sure what you teach but I think this would be best in a language classroom. That being said, it works in all settings. I like that this is primarily a student centered resource. Since students have to create their own flash card set they internalize the information. Finally, have you tried quizlet.com? It is a very similar resource that allows students to play different games with their sets. It too has an ipad app like cramberry which I like.
  •
I agree with Kenton - it is a great resource for students to use to learn information. What I like about this one is that you can search ready-made sets. But I like quizlet.com a lot better. It has interactive games to learn the words and can even write quizzes for the students to test their knowledge. I have used that for independent study of vocabulary words for novels. I couldn't write 30 different quizzes to assess their familiarity with the new words they chose for themselves, but on quizlet they can take a quiz and show me their score. It has apps from Apple and Android so students can use it from different devices. Also, it has a print option for students who don't have access to a smart phone or internet outside of school. I like that it gives them an active way to study and instant feedback on what they know and what they need to study still. Finally, it has class options so I could enter a set and share it easily with the students.

bubbl.us | brainstorm and mind map online - 1 views

  •
A mind-mapping service with 1.5 million users and more than 3 million mind maps.
  •
I have used bubbl.us in the classroom before for brainstorming activities. The part that I don't like about it is having to sign up and then you are actually limited on the free account. This is definitely program for student use. I really do enjoy this program, but with 1:1 iPads, we went with Inspiration instead.
