Siri Acquisition Brings Apple Much Closer to the 'Knowledge Navigator' Concept - Mac Ru... - 4 views

  •
"In 1987, Apple produced a concept video demonstrating a future computer called the Knowledge Navigator. The tablet-like device offered the user a natural language interface, video conferencing, multi-touch display and access to a global network of information. Siri understands what you say, accomplishes tasks for you and adapts to your preferences over time.mSiri can help you find and plan things to do. While seemingly the product of an overactive imagination, Apple's recent acquisition of Siri brings Apple a lot closer to that vision than ever before. Siri reportedly was born from the CALO artificial intelligence project which sought to fulfill a call for a "a cognitive computer system should be able to learn from its experience, as well as by being advised." Apple's value in acquiring Siri appears to be focused on this personal assistance technology. "

What's working: Teacher uses grants, tools to teach students ... - Bakersfield.com - 0 views

  • GRANTS FOR LEARNING Webb would likely teach differently without the more than 20 grants she's gotten in recent years. Earlier this year, Webb was one of three educators nationwide who received a grant for the "Fascinating Forensics" project. Students learn how the three branches of U.S. government work together to create, implement and enforce the law. They learn interview techniques plus about physical evidence like blood spatter and fingerprints. In April she received a "true sport award" from the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency for motivating students to resist performance-enhancing drugs, among other things. In her program, called Webb's Walkers and Recess Runners, students learn about nutritious eating, portion control, personal hygiene, body image, heart rate, metabolism and the importance of physical activity at home. The grants speak to Webb's personal interest. She's an athlete, which she said could also explain her competitive nature for the grants. Winning them, she said, is "like winning a race."

K-5 iPad Apps for Applying: Part Three of Bloom's Revised Taxonomy | Edutopia - 17 views

  •
"Bloom's Revised Taxonomy breaks each learning stage (remember, understand, apply, analyze, evaluate and create) into four separate levels of knowledge. These levels include the factual, conceptual, procedural, and metacognitive. Together the levels of knowledge are making incremental movements from a factual understanding, to the personal command and realization of the learning process. The revised taxonomy also lists two cognitive processes within the applying stage: executing and implementing.1 These two processes illustrate the range of thinking skills possible within a stage. Executing requires the application of factual knowledge and refers to the ability to carry out learned procedures such as solving a long division problem. On the other hand, implementing reaches up into the metacognitive level and demands that students be able to apply learned skills to a task that initially appears to be an unrelated to prior learning experiences. "When I'm considering an app review, or considering purchasing an app for personal use, one of the first things that I do is to read the user reviews, as I'm sure many of you do too. Unfortunately, a newly released app or an app without a lot of reviews can sometimes have fake reviews, planted by developers or their friends, to trick unsuspecting customers and artificially inflate ratings. We've developed a quick guide that will help you avoid apps that are being falsely promoted."

  •
One of the most anticipated features of the new iPhone OS 3.0 is the ability to find lost devices using Apple's MobileMe web service, which requires an annual fee. Find My iPhone plots the location of a missing phone on a map, allows users to flash a message on the screen and play an alert tone. If all else fails, the user can remotely erase any personal data on an iPhone.

iPads for education? | Teacher's Monthly - 3 views

  • Elkanah have a set of iPads that roam around from class to class. Both schools found it important for the teachers to be acquainted with the technology before the learners began using it in school. Elkanah provided teachers with iPads six months before implementing the system with learners. Stadler found that this approach worked best and that hands-on staff training was very important. Elkanah selected their Grade 6 teachers, being the most technology-enthused group in the school, to take part in the iPad project. “Sharing ideas and collaborating amongst each other while using the device as a personal device first, before taking it to the classroom, was a key to success,” said Stadle
