The New York Times > Magazine > The Lessons of Classroom 506 - 0 views

  • ''Inclusion'' is the latest in a series of evolving strategies for special-needs education.
  • nstead of merely placing that child in a standard classroom for part or even most of the day and expecting him to keep up (a strategy often known as ''mainstreaming''), inclusion involves rearranging the class -- both the physical space and the curriculum -- to include him.
  • impaired and nonimpaired children can come to see one another as peers.
  •
This is a great report on inclusion in the classroom. The author spent a year chronicling the daily events and issues surrounding Classroom 506 at the Manhattan School for Children.

Wikispaces - Wikis for Teachers - 0 views

I've used Wikispaces with middle school classes. Very interactive, easy to add students as members. You can add any kind of media, host student projects. I used to have students complete bell-ringers and closure on the message boards. The new Wiki Classroom adds other features. The site says, "We took the best parts of Wikispaces and added a newsfeed, realtime assessment, and a beautiful mobile experience. We think you'll love it."

Cutting Arts programs can actually cost schools MORE!
  • While school districts see the answer to their budget crisis as cuts to art programs, they do not foresee the problems that arise when students have no creative outlets in the classroom.
  • Disciplinary staff had to be added to deal with the new problems that had arisen. In most cases, the additional staff cost more than the art programs themselves
