The Future of the Internet IV | Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project - 0 views

  •
The Pew Research Center is not as unbiased a source of information as they'd like to portray but they are used as the source for much of the statistics that will get passed around. Haven't finished this paper yet but looking forward to the section on control and governance.

Catherine Deveny Sacked Over Logie Twitters - 0 views

  •
Defending her tweets and taking aim at the fallout, Deveny, who was sacked as a columnist for The Age over her Logies comments, likened Twitter to "passing notes in class, but suddenly these notes are being projected into the sky and taken out of context. "Twitter is online graffiti, not a news source." Wrong.

UK: Lords pass "Digital Economy Bill" - 0 views

  •
The "Digital Economy Bill" has been passed by the Lords and is now expected to be rushed through the Commons before the general elections. Despite criticism by the UK's major telecommunication providers and global internet giants like Google, the government said it was still committed to giving courts the power to block websites which are infringing copyright. The bill is mainly aiming to tackle internet privacy. Some of it's paragraphs however could lead to internet censorship.

Facebook "Not Abiding by Law" in Europe - CBS News - 0 views

  •
Very interesting article about people being marked in social networks even if they are not a member - can Facebook and the like be made responsible? An Italian court recently sentenced three Google executives because of a video posted by a user. Swiss and German privacy watchdogs further discuss the matter, many other EU nations are also involved. Google asks where to draw the line between censorship (controlling users' content being an invasion of their privacy) and free speech. There could be a conflict between US Web Giants and EU authorities. Only mentioned in passing that American media companies only react very slowly to European concerns "given the close relationship between Silicon Valley and the administration of President Obama".

Filter goes ahead regardless - 0 views

  •
According to Stephen Conroy, there is nothing that can be done to stop the passing of the legislation implementing mandatory internet filtering. He stands by all the statements he has previously made, and advises this IS occurring in June.
  •
This article is about Stephen Conroy's push for the Internet filtering regardlessof the scrutiny it has undergone over the past months. The government will force ISPs to block a series of websites that have been secretly identified as refused classification.

Web 2.0: the new election superweapon | Politics | The Observer - 2 views

  • From Twitter and Facebook to viral ads and crowdsourcing, technology appears to offer parties powerful new ways to engage voters
  • All three mainstream parties are adopting similar techniques, but with very different aims.
  • Social media matters precisely because it is social, creating networks and building intimacy between strangers quickly – even if some of them are politicians.
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • Once the novelty of politicians in virtual life passes, social media users may return to ignoring them.
  • Perhaps the challenge for politicians online remains the same as in the days of soapbox and megaphone: just being heard.
  •
Interesting article on The Guardian on how the main British parties use social media. The article, though, treats social media as a fad that may eventually dissolve. The question, though, remains: do political parties know how to use social media?

Unvarnished: A Clean, Well-Lighted Place For Defamation - 0 views

  • Unvarnished argues that there are lots of tools to actively manage your reputation (like updates, ability to comment and request new reviews)  but it omits the most important tool of all: the ability to strike down really damaging posts.
  • This could be the place to anonymously settle vendettas: co-worker swipes a promotion, go to Unvarnished, boss dishes out a small bonus, go to Unvarnished, the vice president makes an ambiguous pass at your girlfriend, go to Unvarnished…you get the idea.
  •
Unvarnished (www.getunvarnished.com) is a recently launched social networking site wherein anyone can create an online profile for a professional (think LinkedIn), and any user can post reviews (mostly negative) about you, anonymously. The website's founder says that Unvarnished gives an individual the opportunity to disprove any negative claims about him/her. However, I agree with the author of the article in believing that the site actually encourages and empowers users to have a backstabbing spree. It will be interesting to see in the next coming months if Unvarnished actually takes off.

U.S vs. AUSTRALIA RELATIONS CHILL OVER INTERNET CENSORSHIP - 0 views

  •
The Rudd government's proposal will be completely ineffective as far as keeping children safe goes, it will capture much more material than the government implies - including sites such as this one, euthanasia, abortion, safe drug use and porn sites - and the cost will be borne entirely by the ISP's, who will inevitably pass their costs on to their users.
