UK parties ignoring social media ahead of poll | EurActiv - 0 views

  • The UK's political parties use social media for "one-off witty campaigns" but they do not engage in US-style outreach to their voters, according to an analysis by a British consultancy published ahead of elections due on 6 May.
  • The UK's political parties have not embraced social media as they were expected to do before the upcoming May elections, concludes research carried out by analysts at Ovum, a consultancy
  • "Politicians should be using chat platforms like the popular Twitter website to drive immediate responses to publicised events like televised political debates."

  • "The UK has its own idiosyncrasies and we must not lose sight [of the fact] that many social media platforms have not been adopted by all ages and classes in society," the analyst added.
  • "The vast majority of MEPs are using the Internet and are certainly being inspired by the success that Barack Obama has had, but too many of them still believe that digital tools are less effective than traditional forms of communication, such as television and newspapers," said James Stevens, senior vice-president for digital services at the consultancy.

Interesting data on how and why British politicians are slow in the use of social media for political campaigning. They still trust other more traditional channels. Interesting data: Europeans are lagging behind American policy makers in their use of Twitter and other means of digital communication. Might the higher age average of European citizens have something to do with it?

Nobel laureate accuses European companies Siemens and Nokia to help Iran regime - 0 views

  •
Nobel prizewinner Shirin Ebadi accused German engineering giant Siemens and Finnish telecoms firm Nokia of supplying Iran with technology to help it suppress democratic dissent. The European Parliament also supports that arguement and strongly criticised international companies, in particular Nokia Siemens for giving Iranian authorities the tools needed for censorship and surveillance. Both companies argue that they could not be blamed for the misuse but that their technologies "play a significant role in the development of societies and the advancement of democracy"

Facebook "Not Abiding by Law" in Europe - CBS News - 0 views

  •
Very interesting article about people being marked in social networks even if they are not a member - can Facebook and the like be made responsible? An Italian court recently sentenced three Google executives because of a video posted by a user. Swiss and German privacy watchdogs further discuss the matter, many other EU nations are also involved. Google asks where to draw the line between censorship (controlling users' content being an invasion of their privacy) and free speech. There could be a conflict between US Web Giants and EU authorities. Only mentioned in passing that American media companies only react very slowly to European concerns "given the close relationship between Silicon Valley and the administration of President Obama".

  •
Following a Facebook user's invitation for people to submit drawings of Prophet Mohammed and the ensuing condemnation from individual Muslim's and Muslim groups, The Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) has extended a ban on Facebook until May 31, and has also applied the ban to popular video sharing website YouTube and restricted Wikipedia. Depicting the prophet in a perceived blasphemous manner is considered sacrilegious. Over 100,000 people had become fans of the page on Facebook. Thousands of protesters have held multiple public rallies against Facebook, with anti-America and anti-European sentiment high.
