Linda Hugues examines how different digital natives and digital immigrants are. She puts forward how digital natives can be impaired in the way they focus on issues and how these differences can induce a bit of a culture clash at work. All in all, both "immigrants" and "natives" have assets but how stressfull it can be for people not used to these new technologies.

The United Kingdom parliament has passed the Digital Economy Bill, an extensive and controversial piece of legislation, by a vote of 189 to 47. The legislation encompasses online copyright infringement, Internet piracy, regulation of TV and radio, the classification of video games, regulations over ISPs, and a hodgepodge of other digital topics.

This is an article I bookmarked a few weeks ago but neglected to post to Diigo. I was planning to focus on Haiti as the subject for a blog entry but didn't follow through. Regardless, this article outlines the plan by broadcasters to gain money through digital sales of a telethon intended to raise funds for the relief effort in Haiti. The main point of the article is not to look at the digital divide between Haiti and the nations funding relief efforts, as I initially thought. It looks at the telethon as a test run to figure out how to monetize live internet streaming and mobile downloads of television content.

Amendments made to the digital economy bill last week, handing courts the power to force internet service providers (ISPs) to block certain websites, threaten freedom of speech and will lead to British websites being blocked without due judicial process, the chief executives of leading technology companies said in an open letter to the Financial Times. The heads of the four largest UK internet service providers as well as Google, Facebook, eBay and Yahoo have all co-signed the letter, along with consumer groups and academics, objecting to amendment. Theoretically the amendment could lead to sites such as YouTube being blocked in the UK.

This article is a case against the FCC and the broadband plan as it doesn't support the building of an extensive network accessible to all. The author however shows how the private sector could come up with solutions to that problem. It is a very interesting point of view on the digital divide as well as on internet governance issues.
